Tony Swain said the bass line was from a Roland SH-1000 and played in by hand to a multitrack reel to reel over a period of about 3 days as he had to overdub new parts to fix mistakes - They did not have a sequencer he said.
The do do, d-d-du, du, d-du, du-du, do do, d-d-du, du, d-du, d-du, d-du, do-do sound?

That's the sequence style sound I'm talking about(I think), sounds a bit like an electric piano played using a single key, however their is a chorded stab also just before he first starts singing - rather more a bright brass sounding stab.

The bass from 'Illusions' has been remade by Himalaya for Alchemy in his Vintage Sound pack.

I think as in the Freeez case it may of pre dated the 'Gonna Get You'(IOU/Pop Goes My Love LP), because they went to New York to do that album, Jellybean and Arthur Baker had a big hand in that LP(Baker used a micromoog and prophet 5 for Play At Your Own Risk/Planet Rock and I noticed similar sounds on IOU like the fairlight Orch5 and Roland 808 - so maybe the same synths). I think we may be looking at the 'Southern Freeez LP' period for the use of this Polymoog by the band themselves. Maybe...

My favourite sound on Southern Freeez track is that big paddy sweeping sound! 3:24 seconds > Wonder if you can spot an Polymoog sounds here steve?

The chordal stab sound you mention - That is the sound he said was preset 9 on a 280a Polymoog. Preset 9 is a brass sound. He ran it through an orange mxr phaser to get that phasing type sound.
He said he used a Boss chorus stomp box (CE2 I think)on the SH-1000 bass line.

I did not know Southern Freez was on Beggars Label - Great track, always sounds happy and makes me think of summers when I was younger(When we got summers in the uk):). You may be right about the Polymoog because I think Beggars would have had a few Polys with their connection to Gary Numan.
I'm not recognising that sound you mention in the track, but it could be using Vox H in VAR mode( with no modulation) and it could be through some effect.
They may have used a 203a aswell to get that sweep sound.
I'm still making the presets for ZOM ZOM so I will have a play around today and tomorrow and see if I can make some sounds like that.

Cheers,
Steve

Great work Steve, as always - and maybe ever more so this time round :tu:

(I pre-ordered it last night).

I was always half-interested in buying a Polymoog - but only half because they were notoriously unreliable and there's equally great sounding hardware for similar prices which are more reliable imho - but I love the sound.

The most sexily hypnotising Polymoog tune / sound that I've ever heard comes from Benge's ''Twenty Systems'' album - a wonderful album that (as you can guess) features songs from 20 vintage synths.

I'm not connected to Ben 'Benge' Edwards in anyway, but that album really is worth taking a closer listen to.

Cheers

Polymoogs can be troublesome - I'm scared to move mine.
Great sound from them, but they can be trouble and it costs to keep them alive, same with Arp Quadra - I was resampling my quadra for this big update I have planned for Sounds of the Quadra and the Quadra broke down. All the scripting and graphics are done for the Quadra update and the thing breaks half way through sampling a big collection of presets I was making.
It is in the repair shop now and I dread to think what the bill is going to be, but it just goes with the territory with these old synths.
I will have a listen to Benge later today - might give me some new ideas for presets for ZOM ZOM.

Steve

I was wondering what had happened to that update - it was quite a while back you mentioned it and I've been waiting eagerly. Hope the Quadra comes back good as new 8)

Yes, finished the scripting and Anders completed all the new graphics and new sequencer graphics. The Quadra had been working fine and then I started to sample loads of cool sounds made on it(for a preset type system similar to the Jen sx update that went out) and then the thing starts making this strange buzzing sound in the audio and the front panel has gone crazy. It had been working for ages aswell and sods law is when you really need it, it breaksdown.

The trill function has been added to the lead section and the Phaser is closer to the original now.Loads of new stuff added, just waiting for the Quadra to be fixed. Should not take long once it is back as everything else is done.

Just added some new audio clips which demonstrate some of the sounds and the Vox Humana sound from the direct output instead of the main output.

The audio clips are ZOM ZOM performing some NUMAN tracks.

All sounds (except drums) are from ZOM ZOM.

Just noticed the Oberheim Xpander incentive... as if I needed an incentive!!! That's wonderful, thanks!

So far I absolutely LOVE all of the libraries that I've gotten from Synth Magic! Looking forward to picking this up as well!

Thanks - really pleased you like the things Anders and myself make - I'm not just saying that either, I mean it. I'm sure most devs like to hear that people like and use the things they make. Makes all the effort making these things worthwhile. :)

I think you will love Zom Zom.

The Xpander library and Marion Systems MSR-2 library is thick and ballsy sounding - Lots of great analogue tones in there.

Ha! I was thinking of doing a cover of Complex as soon as Zom Zom arrived

What are you using for the old drum machine sounds Stephen?

I'm using the Forgotten keys CR78 library. Very good Drum machine emulation of the CR78 for Kontakt, sounds just like the real thing - And it has Numan presets :)
