Compressing kicks to make fish

There's a unique way to get this effect that I don't think has been mentioned yet. Set a compressor like Kotelnikov or Pro-C to "listen" or "delta", set the release to the slowest setting, and start to open the attack until the attack in the signal is where you want it. This is a trick I came up with a few years ago to use a normal compressor as a transient designer. With the release set all the way on, you preserve the most of the original signal. Transient designers tend to distort the signal in really unproductive ways sometimes, and this is a cleaner alternative.

I just checked it, and it turned the kick waveform to fish. So, I'd consider that a success.

See, to me this is the magic state-of-the-art way of doing things. Tools like Volume Shaper and sample-accurate volume editing only really exist in the modern digital age, while compressors have been used to shape kick drums since the dawn of rock and roll.

I believe trance kicks are somewhat harder than in the dawn of rock and roll .

This comes from a misunderstanding of attack time.

Compressor attack time is the time taken for the compressor to reach the ratio, once triggered by the threshold. It will not deliver instant GR at the specific attack time.
