His widow is Laurie Anderson who is much more influential to me.

Ah, shoot...

Love the first three VUs more than just about anything, found his solo albums kind of frustrating (Transformer would be my favourite by far) but still helluva catalogue. "Songs for Drella" is my favourite of his later work, though "Like a Possum" is a truly amazing track. Kind of a shame his swansong was the metallica collab...

RIP.

A sad day... He wrote some amazingly timeless songs that are up there with the best ever committed to tape.

Some of the comments here are extremely insensitive... I would have thought a little more respect appropriate

Her "Big Science" LP is one of my all time faves, very influential in shaping my musical outlook.

There's a 'life in pictures' feature on the BBCs news site for Reed, includes an absolutely lovely shot of Anderson gazing at him. Quite moving.

It's always a bit sad when someone dies, well, for a few of those left behind that is.
I never liked his music, frankly, nor am I a fan of that posthumous glorification that is so common whenever someone dies.
Anyway, he had an eventful life, a long life in line with the life expectancy in the west (despite the drugs)... There are several big names in the world of music that will die within the next couple of years. Given the explosion of artists and stars over the past couple of decades, there will be more and more famous people dying...
At the end of the day we all end up the same...

Well, I am an atheist, I don't believe there is anything left that could rest in peace...
Thus I don't use such standard phrases...

He was amazing while working with John Cale, but felt the Velvets fell apart without Cale.

His solo stuff was up and down, but overall he wrote and arranged some songs that were so unlike anyone else.
