Ironically, I read this thread while listening to music through Winamp. Been on my PCs since late 90s.. from back in mp3.com days. Oh how I'll miss it years down the road once the last build no longer functions on Windows 10, 11, or 12

It was *THE* media player.. compact, power featured (if you wanted it to be), and pretty.. If I do say so myself.. it could play near any audio format, including MOD songs!

I used to relax with some music going, as a teen, and used to gaze at the screen with one of it's visualization plugins set to cycle through presets. Good times.

Look, I'm using past-tense already.

You can still dl a copy of it from softpedia - 2.95 or lower seem to be the most favourite. Old versions still have a copy too.

If you are on Linux then Audacious or QMMP are pretty good clones with excellent skins. Both pretty stable.

But is Microsoft coming to the rescue?:

The claim about Microsoft was deleted, so I think it isn't true. Why should Microsoft buy the Winamp source code when they already have the Windows Media Player?

I tried the alternatives mentioned in this thread but I still haven't found an AUDIO player as versatile as Winamp.

As a VIDEO player, I use VLC Player, but not for audio as it doesn't have playlists...

I have been using 2.95 for many years now, disabled the update check, no need for a newer version...

Been using winamp since v1.40. Theyve added a lot of 'features', i didnt want or need, along the way that made me stop updating.

Between the hotkeys and queue list features, i havent found anything that fits my needs better. Gunna grab a bunch of old versions while theyre still floating around.

As for why MS would want to purchase it, the reason mentioned already to kill it, but also, there are a lot parts to rip out of winamp. IE, havent touched WMP in a long time, but when i would, for years winamps visuals always made the MS ones look bad.

used winamp back in a win days, but after v3 got out, I was little fed with it's interface, so I switched to foobar2000 and never looked back. Still a pity, I know lots of people are using it as their goto player.
