on my 2000+ with the stock cooler it never got above 55C, until the dust prevented the fan from cooling the heat sink. I have since put a TT volcano 11 on and it gets up to about 57C full tilt with the fan set to just below audible levels, which is acceptable to me..

Giving the maximum temperatures. Seems like 80-90C is the max. Mine never gets above 50C! ;perhaps I should turn on me heating...![]()

By lockup, do you mean things that causes the machine to reboot or become inoperatable?
I do get blue screens now and then, like once or twice a week, but I´m pretty sure they´re network-related.
As well, I sometimes see my systems ressources disappearing when I move some 2000 files from one partition to another.
Fortunately this I can fix by just terminating windows explorer.
But errors due to an overheated system would occur several times a day, wouldn´t they? And those described above wouldn´t happen because of a way too warm CPU, am I right?
Just wanna be sure

I once assembled a machine and *forgot* to connect the CPU heatsink fan. (wicked me) The machine would boot and after like a minute or so.. shut down (or restart) Twas an AMD 1800+ . Guess thats like a safety measure... im sure chances of frying your mobo/CPU are minimum.
Now i installed MoboMonitor yesterday and configured it as per the site instructions (my mobo was not listed default). Worked on the same project that i was the day before. Temperatures seemed under control. Around 55-64. I did uninstall the PCalert utility that came default with the mobo (running both applications together gave vague values; one sensor one monitor?? ).
Now my question is, those warnin beeps i get of the cabnit speaker (connected to the mobo), are those triggered by the software (XP) or the Mobo ? I installed PC Alert after i first heard these beeps. And then the same project yesterdaty was doing seemingly fine (with a different applet installed).
Those beeps have nothing to do with the monitoring software, do they ?
also talking of lockups... though i have had my machine beepin like an ambulance, espessialy when bouncing a mix of a project thats clocking 70-80% of CPU power, i have never had a lockup.
tonight i flash the BIOS.

I have the same problem. My last computer didn't run hot. When I assembled my new one, I didn't think the case mattered. At least, outside of looking nice. Now I realize I was wrong.BC wrote:The CPU and MB temps were still way too high. Even with the fans on HIGH. Was noisey as hell too.
How ironic then, when I pulled the side cover off and disabled the fans(except the CPU fan, which I turned all the way down, but not off) that the whole system ran cool and quiet.
It runs super loud and hot with the side on. When I take the side off the computer, it practically gives a sigh of relief.
Make sure you research your cases before selecting one!

I tried flashing my BIOS last night.. No luck. I have downloaded the latest BIOS version from the MSI website. Made a boot floppy disk (right clik on a:, format, make boot disk. ) Booted to command prompt. navigated to the bios folder. Typed the filename (xxxxx.exe) enter. I get a screen asking me type in the filename ?????
Just how does one do this (wish i had a net connection, i wudve used the update utility)

Apart from the flash utility you need to copy a bios file of a specific version to your floppy. If you get it zipped from the net, unzip it before copying to disk. Copy it in the same folder as the flash utility. Boot with the floppy, start the flash utility, and when it asks for a filename, enter the filename of the unzipped bios file.

Hi all!
I know this thread is really old, but never too old i guess, since problems with overheating still is a common problem for many people.
I had more and more crashes recently with my machine, especially when putting heavy load on my CPU with craving projects in Cubase.
I actually first thought it was all because of the RAM, because one day the system simply died, and came back to life when I replaced the memory.
But nope, the problems persisted.
So I decided to check the temp of my CPU again, and when being at about 80 C during normal operations, it just went hotter and hotter when doing the heavy stuff with Cubase.
So I went to see what I could find about my CPU on the net, an Athlon 1800 XP, and even if it said that it works up to 90-95 C, most people seemed to never get higher temps than 60.
I went back here to this thread as well to see what I back then in April told was my temperature, which was 72-76 C.
As well people said that for sure there was something wrong with my temperature sensor, but now I start thinking that it actually works correctly, but that my CPU fan ain´t mounted correctly.
As I said back then, I´m not gonna touch the fan, because it caused me too many problems when mounting it in the first place..
And then I came up with this other idea: What about just putting a normal room fan as near to the computer as possible?
I went online to see if I could find any info on others who already did that, and I found a posting on a forum saying that it could easily decrease the temp by 10-15 degrees!
So after I had been doing some rearrangement of my harddrives that made them produce less heat and cleaned my fan as good as I could without unmounting it in order to decrease the temp a bit as well that way, I placed my room fan, a small box inside which the fan is kept, as close to the inside of the computer as I could. In fact 1/4 is inside of the computer now, and it works GREAT!
The cleaning up and rearranging HD`s already decreased the temp by about 2 degrees, but the fan indeed did some magic:
During normal operations I now stay most of the time at 64 C, and Cubase when it´s fully loaded so I get cracks and pops in the sound won´t make it go higher than 72 C!
Ok, that´s still alot, but not so much that the system crashes, and that´s the important thing for me.
And btw, I should add that the reason for why my temps went from 72-76 to 80 C during 4 months is prolly because of that the room temp has gone up alot - in fact I did see the temp go down yesterday when having all windows open and the wind blowing through my room.
The fan I´m using is the kind which can also be used to heat up the room in the winter, and when that time comes, I prolly won´t be needing it for my comp anyway because of the significantly lower room temperatures
So everybody who´s having problems with crashes, especially when the system is at hard work, check the temperature of your CPU, and get a multipurpose 20 € fan to solve your problems!
Just thought I´d share this.
PS: A fan like that is not just multipurpose in terms of being able to both cool and heat, but also I noticed that my harddrives now are much less warm than before. When they were rearranged they´d still get glowing hot, but the roomfan also as well keeps the temp low on these units, plus the chipset which on my mobo has been reported to sometimes get too hot, though it´s got a cooler on it from the factory. So unless you´ve got money to spend for all these little coolers you´d need for all the hardware in your machine, this way is definately the cheapest - and the most quiet one as well - my room fan makes a 1/20th of noise compared to the PSU fan and the CPU fan

My theory is that if its stable then there isn't a problem. I have just today upgraded mine from a 1800XP to 3200XP. No problems so far. However, I do run CPUIdle:

Without it running my new chip will hit 62 degrees when running Prime95 (cpu stress utility) with it running it will hit about 52 degrees! That is quite a decrease. I am running the 30 day trial still but will definatly be purchasing it (30 Euros). Its only really costs a little bit more than an extra fan but dosen't add extra noise. I'd say all people on this thread having temp problems should install this app right now.
