I was reading a couple a days' ago about a record company A&R rep, EDM, that complained that they got about 1000 demos a week and they all sounded the same. When will people learn?

Its easier to copy then innovate, its a human trait to mimic as its a learning function.

2000 was roughly the cut-off point.. from then on, it went downhill real fast for trance and its derivatives.
Before that though, the music was still properly made music by proper artists.

yes thats my point.

"electronic dance music" is not a kind of music the same way that "sandwich" is not a kind of food.

a sandwich is a way to prepare food...not the food itself. electronic dance music is a descriptor of the methods used to make the music...not the music itself.

asking if edm is too formulaic is inappropriate...the question doesnt make sense.

A sandwich has slices of bread and something in the middle. That is its form. Form before content, one could define as 'formulaic'. So it makes sense to some people and more people knew what the OP was talking about than didn't, I think.

sandwiches may have a basic form, but you can put anything in them. they can be sweet or savoury or a combination of the two.

there are so many different kinds of bread these days, when i was a lad it was brown or white, vive la choice!
