Win 10 to be a free upgrade for Win 7/8 users

i have a fundamental problem with this statement:
"On stage, Microsoft’s Terry Myerson pitched Windows 10 as a service, instead of simply an operating system that a user installs."
absolutely no good can come to me as a user from such an approach. an operating system IS NOT a "service"...its a product that i use.
"service" implies some kind of ongoing agreement in which ill be expected to pay for something indefinitely.
of course theyll give it to you for "free"...so you can pay for it forever.
no sir...i dont like it.

Theve finally gone to the dark side
Lets hope they dont break their compatibility with every upgrade like Apple do

So far, everything I had running on Windows 7 runs on Windows AND on Windows 10 Technical Preview. So, at least in this item, is the good old Windows way of keeping things compatible for as long as they can.VariKusBrainZ wrote:You mean like MacOS upgrades?chaosWyrM wrote:

What I don't like is the GUI. More and more "toyish" and "touchy". The upper bar is now thicker (in the latest release), and with a big X - evidently thought for touch. And the new icons... Arrgh...

well i would expect that everything you already had would work. what i dont like is the idea that things are moving away from that. what happens when ms decides that all NEW things become subscription only? or that the os itself becomes subscription only?fmr wrote:So far, everything I had running on Windows 7 runs on Windows AND on Windows 10 Technical Preview. is it not obvious that thats where this is ultimately headed? maybe not soon...but whos to say that everyone gets on win10 now...and then by win13 (or whatever) theres almost no backwards compatibility with pre win10 and windows is subscription only?
"pay us forever or loose the ability to use your computer at all" seems like a great business model if youre microsoft.

Free upgrade? Probably to an entry level version with support for DirectX 9 and Internet Explorer, you can only boot from microsoft.com and store your files via WLAN to a USB stick connected to a Surface Pro.
To use advanced features such as local filesystem access, the Metro style Interface as well as access to 3rd party applications, simply join our "purchase to own" subscription model. Only $29.95/month for up to 5 years, or whenever our next minor GUI upgrade receives a ridiculous major version increase. You will only be eligible for customer support if you collect 5+ tokens by staying subscribed for 5 months or longer. You are free to quit the subscription anytime, but by doing so forfeit your right to customer support and access to advanced features.

I will get the upgrade if it is free but I may not use it. Not sure all my software will work with it or not.

And that is it. WILL companies jump on board with it the way they did with 7? 8 is a little more questionable (especially driver wise)
Still, the theory seems to be "every other OS" with windows seems to be the right call.
But honestly.......there isn't ONE SINGLE THING I can think of that I wish windows did different than 7. Maybe for people caught up in all the smart phone things, maybe touch screen, but for someone who just used this equipment, 7x64 seems to be the best OS ever made

Is this just Metro your referring to or the desktop environment?fmr wrote:

I couldnt give a shit about Metro and have gotten on fine with Win8 fine since day one.

No, I am talking about the desktop (there is no Metro anymore in desktop windows, it was replaced by the start button, which can be expanded to fill the entire screen if you want).VariKusBrainZ wrote:Is this just Metro your referring to or the desktop environment?fmr wrote:

The icons are toyish (really, they remind me of Toys R'Us) and the upper bar, where are located the close, maximize and minimize buttons, became thicker, and with just a big think X, square and underscore in there. This approach has "touch" written all over it. I would rather prefer to have the good old buttons I had before (even if flat, but I would prefer the 3D).
I still don't get where did Microsoft found that this approach would make the OS look more "modern". It just makes it look UGLY.
