Yes I prefer the Hejira rendition, in fact in that concert she had got a bit more mainstream rock than I would have liked, preferred her folk/jazz days, everything up to and including Mingus is gold.el-bo (formerly ebow) wrote:aMUSEd wrote:I was at this one:

much as i like that version, sonically, the pace and dynamic kinda squanders the impact of so many fantastic lyrics
Joni Mitchell - get well soon!

Context is everything. Clearly I was talking about when the film was created. Yes, the performance was 35 years ago, but I was recounting her triumph in the present tense to re-create the collective state of mind regarding her professional achievement up until that point in her career. It is an accepted literary technique and entirely correct, again in context. But even if it's not, it's a four line post in an obscure thread on an internet music forum. Let it go...

Yes, I know. You were pointing out the context. It wasn't directed at you.el-bo (formerly ebow) wrote:

I don't mind being old. It's being crotchety that gets to me sometimes.
I find it very hard to type posts on KVR while constantly chasing kids out of my yard.
Damn kids...

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

I read somewhere that the lack of response to Mingus set her into a more mainstream direction.
Dont know if that is true but her work up to and including Mingus is ground breaking.
She deserves more credit for blazing a path with those extraordinary recordings.

That is a pity, Hissing of Summer Lawns also got an unfavourable response from some fools. Mingus deserves to be seen as one of her great and most mature albums.

Beside being a great recording, Jaco did some of his best work on Mingus.aMUSEd wrote:...Mingus deserves to be seen as one of her great and most mature albums.
Not just his outstanding bass parts but also his horn arrangements.
A very important disc for several reasons, one, it involved, Migus, Mitchell and Jaco.

Joni was not only a remarkable songwriter, but also a wonderful singer. The emotion in her performances, both live and in the studio is there for all to hear. And she could hit the notes too.
My favourite Mitchell album is Hejira. Every song on that album is golden, and autumnal.
