True, the BusComp has one of the best values for money, as well as Klanghelm compressors.

Ozone 7 on paper might have you thinking it's the most complex, but really it's not. I only use 3 bands on trance, not 4.I tighten up the low end then do a general balancing compression on the low mids to high mids - on the high end i do a very slight de harsher if needed. It's all very intuitive.
Broadly agree here.

Probably because no matter how much I gainstage in the mix, the low bass still needs its own compressor band, so the rest of the mix can breathe.

Ozone makes this much easier for me.

Optimal number of audio plugins is one more than you currently have.

Flux Solera 2.
i'm surprised no one mentioned this fantastic tool. so versatile and amazing sounding!!!

or Flux Solera if you don't want or need that much versatility but want it to sound amazing. they have none of this 'plastic' sound (for lack of better word) that i hear with some other tools mentioned here imo.

now about this 'plastic' sound: what i mean by that is when i use some of these other compressors mentioned they seem to totally screw up the sound (even when used subtly), shift the stuff all over the stereo field and...i don't know...sound like a bad reverb instead of a compressor, smearing stuff all around instead of glueing it all together, killing the intended mix...ymmv.

learn to use a fullband compressor properly BEFORE trying out a multiband compressor.

dynamic eq's are great tools as well, and way more subtle than multiband compressors.

bx_opto

So smooth and unobstrusive. Intuitive to set up, too.

Absolutely loving bx_opto on the master. Really smooth (gluey, syrupy) and keeps the lowend fully intact. Brings the mix to life. Has convinced me that transparency isn't always a must.

I use the API2500 from Waves. Easy to use and versatile. I also have the MJUC from Klanghelm which maybe is less versatile but amazingly easy and Quick to use.

a chain witth vca and vari mu were popular in the past for electronic music mastering , maybe it's style the case (like api2500 or a ssl type of comp with sidechain + tc phoenix mostly for color and compressing very little)

i would try to recreate that with maybe the waves api or a other "graby" comp + mjuc and see how it work (with mjuc you can recreate a similar sound of a driven transformer , sometimes it can be really nice for the kick/bass once in a sweet spot)

kotelnikov ge or dc8c might be good to have as well for smooth compression if needed

The new melda comp could do perfectly the trick too i guess to master trance as many more comps out there.. maybe the alpha the vcs 2, the sonoris ..

what would be nice would be something like a 16 or 32 bar test file and testing all the comps mentioned with a few rule ( peaks level after compression , and the amount of compression , like between 2 and 4 db on the loudest part )

What this thread proves is that it's all about taste - nothing else. The best mixes don't need compression at the mastering stage - remember that too ;)

Yes, exactly. First time to see good comment on this forum. :tu:

Slate VBC FG-Red or Cytomic The Glue to glue it followed by Ik Stealth to get it louder.

Something what i've learned and what works surprisingly well is to use two compressors. One to catch some peaks and another one to glue / groove. Saturation to your taste anywhere.
Don't limit yourself to one do-it-all.

Good case in point today. I needed a vibey pump on a house track - not too much but I had a certain idea of it in my head. It turned out that Waves audiotrack was the only one that came close to matching what I could hear in my head so I went with it for this particular master. No one's going to call it a mastering compressor - but today it was
