I've seen some wild stuff in HPC, but then again it is HPC. HPC is kind of like Mos Eisley, so it's bound to attract the weirder folk. Of course not everyone who posts in HPC is crazy, sometimes you just end up there.

Outside of HPC i get the idea that most people don't want to get in a fight with you on KVR.

Gearslutz seems full of petty name calling and elitist snobs laughing at n00bs. Then again there are also some very friendly professionals who are quite intent on helping us lowly n00bs which is nice.

For all things software I stick to KVR, and when I want to talk about HW related stuff I will sometimes post on Gearslutz.

People are tossers generally. The only difference is there's no need to maintain the brain to mouth filter on the Internet.

Ie, wherever there are people and the Internet we will find tossers.

I still laugh when I recall Ott calling them w*nkers who constantly argue about the sound of preamps.
I just yesterday went to GS to read the (January?) announcement of RME's new thunderbolt-enabled audio interface... and it did indeed descend into ranting about preamps. A moderator actually swooped in and took control. Luckily I was there late and only read the cleaned-up thread.

That's not the first time I've witnessed that happening (other times lacked moderator clean-up).

However, I've been happy to read lots of content over at GS, such as content from various studio people, including some pros who's work I appreciate (most interesting to me was Charlie Clouser's offering of info about his time working with NIN and his own current studio setup). I've never seen such here at KVR. I think that KVR is maybe a bit more populated by hobbyists. That's okay, too. I'm certainly not making money on music production (and expect not to).

I find the idea of, for example, session players vs synth heads to be a valid comparison of differences between these two sites, though nothing is a hard absolute.

I maybe lucky but I once received here a good reply from a studio professional regarding my noobie question. But I lack experience to judge if GS any better in this respect.

It's a few interesting aspects have been raised by people answering this thread. Thanks for that!

What indicates the "pro" or "semi-pro" or "hobbyist" level of a forum, to me, is how many posts there are per day overall. Or rather, how few there are. I think VI-Control wins in this regard. Those folks seem to focus more on making music than talking about making music. (that said, they are certainly more of a niche-community)

I think the level of snobbery is a bit higher at GS, but that in no way correlates to the level of "professional." And whenever I've listened to music posted by slutz, it tends to lean more toward dad-rock or more mainstream-leaning genres, whereas I find a lot more experimental, interesting music here. There are also a lot of slutz who will talk big talk about why their EQ is better than yours, but rarely post any music to show for it. (of course, that happens here too, but to a lesser extent).

I also feel like the more "indie" plugin developers have more of a presence here.

IMHO, YMMV, and all that.

Oh wait, was this split from another thread?

I wasn't aware they are so different. On any given day you can have good/bad at either.

@moderators: Well, they have enough of them. Invariably you are going to run across one you don't like. My main issue over there are that there is one dude that that decides that a particular place is ok to be off topic/against rules for virtually everyone other than a couple of people who must STRICTLY adhere. Childish but what are you going to do?

My very first introduction to this forum was a very nice/innocent question that was trolled immediately. In other words your bias towards one vs another is imaginary.

Agreed. Basically, Gearslutz is more analog than KVR.
Logic Pro | LUNA Pro | OB-X8 | Prophet 6 | OB-6 | Rev2 | TEO-5 | Pro 3 | SE-1X | Minitaur | Deepmind 12D | Slim Phatty | TR-1000 | Analog RYTM mk2 | Digitakt 2 | TD-3 MO | TD-3 | Maschine+

This entire forum is wading through predictions, opinions, barely formed thoughts, drama, and whining. If you don't enjoy that, why are you here? :D ShawnG

Dad Rock. Ha ha. What happens when they die off and their kids are old? Is a newer form of music inducted into the Dad Rock genre?
