I know what's EBU standard. I just can't see any reason to use limiter on such low levels.
Because it's a broadcast standard.

That's why. It's literally required for a lot of people doing professional work, in certain countries, with a broadcast target.

This new sidechaining feature will be the source of many bugs, me thinks! I don't think the VST plugin spec can accomidate that kind of usage reliably in all hosts.

If I remember correct they install 4 versions of a vst2 plugin: mono, mono sc, stereo, stereo sc. Since this already works very well in Pro-C (+ the sidechain input in different hosts too) it might not be such a big source of bugs rather than good tested :D

But you don't need to cut peaks with limiter for this standard. It's -23LUFS not -23 PEAK. Recently I did sound for FPS game following -23LUFS with music and all these gun shots. I had no reason to use peak limiter because even in busy moments there was still room.

It's there for the metering. If they bothered to include all of the fancy M/S/I stuff with all the various rules then it's nice to be able to set the metering to the standard.

Also, you can still have peaks that hit the -1dB peak ceiling required in many places (and some require the ceiling to be -3dBFS). So combining metering in the limiter is rather nice, no?

Sure. Just metering to new EBU standards which most call the reason for end of loudness war in limiter seems to be quite sarcastic. If you know what I mean ;)

Surely for safety reasons it make sense. If only more people would use limiters for that purpose, not to take off whole life from music then world would be a better place :)

Well, feel free not to use any limiter if you think it's redundant :hihi:

A time may come when limiters are unnecessary - they pretty much already are in -23LUFS land. Then Mastering Engineers can focus solely on balancing without compromising sound quality for loudness.

Yup peak limiters and loudness measurements go hand in hand for broacast content.
This is exactly why ToneBoosters Barricade v4 was recently upgraded to have ITU/EBU compliant true peak and loudness metering integrated :-)

I produced a radio spot (22 seconds) recently for -23LUFS and limiting is a as useful as ever for short term loudness reading.
