YESYESYES! King Crimson are amazing! And for me it HAS to be RED! The first time I heard that dissonant riff of the title track, I nearly died! The whole record is awesome, at the end of Starless when the Bass Guitar explodes into the encore of the track, it sends shivers everytime :) I also LOVE the total prog wig out of Islands and Lizard. Amazing stuff!

btw, I heard someone mentioning the need for a prog revival.. well, its happening dude, right now :) check out The Audio Medium by The Cancer Conspiracy. Probably the best rock album to come out since the final Kyuss record. Imagine if King Crimson were around today, but involved with the Hardcore scene (makin them alot more heavy, but still with amazing guitars that SING!) and you have The Cancer Conspiracy.

Also new skool prog bands that rule are Tarantula Hawk, Yeti, Volta Do Mar (not Mars Volta, theyre pretty boring, but still kinda prog influenced), Hella, Guapo. Anyone heard Orthrelm? Oh my lord they are incredible!! :) Maybe more FreeJazz than Prog, but still, WOW!

There's certainly a "math rock" thing on the fringes that appeals to me...

I also love Red. When the bass and drums kick in during the track, "Providence", the hair on the back of my neck stands up. And Fripp's feedback solo is inspired, though I think he could take that much further now as he's grown as an aesthetician/composer/player.

I've heard of TOOL falling into the "math metal" category as well. :)

Interesting and cool is the stated mutual admiration between Fripp and the guys in KC, and all the guys in TOOL (Maynard from TOOL has been quoted as explaining to their live crowds how much KC was a serious influence on their music; Fripp has described TOOL as being one of his favorite bands).

Tool and A Perfect Circle are among my favourite bands around currently. I didn't know about the Fripp connection though - cool

I saw Crimson live last summer in Copenhagen. Pure death metal in odd signatures. Nailed me to the chair. Extreme experience.

Like the old stuff (up until Beat) better, though.

Great to see that there are alot of KC fans here at KVR ( I knew that already but wanted some dialogue going). There does seem to be a split between those that love the early incarnation and the latter period from Red onwards, but in my mind it is still pretty much the brainchild of Mr. Fripp. For those of you who are not fond of his later bands the melodic beauty that was early KC is still alive and well on all the recordings, just not on every track.
I am a fan of of his current work because I can relate as a guitar player who still likes to bash strings and because I still have anger in me and alot of the music reflects that anger towards the ills of the world, a philosophy that I have heard Fripp talk occassionally about in interviews. But I also need to escape into some cozy little spot for comfort and KC can do that as well. I also like to listen to Court of the Crimson King every now and then so it is not liking one above the other. 8)

yeah, I read that when they were doing the Tool and KC tour, the drummer of Tool guested on second drums when KC played RED, IMAGINE THAT!! I Wish I had been in the US to catch that one. Tool are awesome, one of my all time favourite bands, Adam Jones is an incredible guitarist (and also special effects artist as well!) his guitar playing has been a big influence on me for years. It makes me very happy to see a band that are totally off doing their own thing (regardless of what gets in Kerrang magazine or whatever) and still manage to be really popular and appeal to a massive wide range of people.

I'd kill to see KC live, I missed them by a day when I was in Mexico City last October, GAH!! I can imagine that being an incredible gig as well.

and don't get me started on Death Metal :D Cryptopsy anyone! f**k YES! Cynic = prog as f**k!

I love Cynic's "Focus". Are they still active?

I went through phases of prog to metal to Praxis to Naked City and Zorn-influenced bands (Mike Patton et al). What a strange trip it's been! :D

'Girls of the Road' ... might I be the only person on earth who actually likes 'Islands' ...?

I wonder why nobody mentioned 'Earthbound'. First - and only - time ever I heard musicians have live sex with their instruments :-O

Well, maybe I'm just too sick.

If you like Cynic, try Aghora and Spiral Architect.

I think all the albums have their own charm: happens with a revolving lineup!

"Ladies of the Road", that is. Something like...

High-diving Chinese trender
Black hair and black suspenders
Said, "Please me, no surrender:
"Just love to feel your Fender."

Great raunchy saxes! :)

hell yes, Spiral Architect are amazing, but I can't say I was that into the Aghora record, really disapointed as it was ex Cynic, didnt like the opera vocals and the riffs werent nearly as good as on Focus. God I love Focus, so ahead of its time, nothing like it before or since, incredible record!

and Markleford: all awesome bands, you've had a good trip :)

virtual virtuoso: I love Islands, your not on your own at all.
