Hi guys,

I love the SE 02 sequencer so I wanna use it to sequence some of my synth VSTs.

What is your workflow when it comes to using the SE 02 sequencer in DAW (Ableton)? I'm running the SE 02 through USB audio.

I managed to make it work as per SEQ Setup:

- select SEQ mode on synth
- press both Note + Gate
- press 2 and select USB

Image

What I find annoying though is that, as soon as I move onto the next Sequence preset, the SEQ Setup settings are reset (it loses the fact that I pressed USB) and I lose the Sync: as a result, the SE 02 no longer triggers my VST synth, and I have to go through the same SEQ Setup steps again with the next Sequence and save again...

Is this real, there's no global SEQ Setup for ALL Sequence presets to be saved at once? I have to go through these steps each time I select another Sequence?

It's kind of missing the point, since the fun lies in quickly browsing from one SE 02 Sequence to another while testing out my VST synth with it.

My question also applies to [1] Destination and [3] Key Trigger by the way, similarly, is there not Master settings for it, instead of having to save them one by one for each Sequence?

Thank you.

Hi,

the Roland SE-02 is the only analog gear I got and I love it because in my opinion it's pretty versatile,
it covers a wide choice of sound from drums to bass, synth pad, brass, leads, fx etc...
and u can easily turn it into poly by "re-recording" somes part, I make a little Jam ( one synth one song ) you can listen here only with the SE-02

thanks for read

Although I really like the Moog sound, I don't have a Moog hardware unit.
(I guess I find them a bit too expensive).

My current hardware setup is: Roland MC-707, Roland TB-3, Behringer TD-3, Korg Monologue, Korg MS-20 Mini, Behringer Odyssey (most likely I'm going to sell that one). You see I like me some bass synths with character  .

Personally I see the following pros and cons.

Pro

- I like Roland and it would integrate well with my MC-707
- Presets : I want presets so I can switch easily; dialing in from scratch is not my thing
- Size might actually be a good thing as I like to keep my setup space manageable
- Price : features of Roland, Ok price and Moogy sound with 3 osc's (Minitaur only has 2)

Con

- I already have the Monologue which is somewhat similar
- More of a GAS thing than that I really need it
- Most of what I have is already bass oriented
- Small knobs; don't know if it would irritate me; build quality only moderate
- Sounds pretty Moogy but not 100%

Your thoughts?
I bought a Roland SE-02 and ended up returning it before my 30 day window was up. Here are my reasons:

The knobs are minuscule. It's not that they wobble or skip values. They just feel like cheap tiny plastic.

The size of the unit is so small that there is no room for a small OLED display so you can name your patches and adjust various global settings. IMO, the Boutique form factor is completely stupid. The SE-02 would be so much better if it was the size of one of Behringer's Eurorack synths such as the Model D and Pro-1. And it would be better still if it was a 3U rack/module.

The SE-02 is surprisingly well-endowed with various synthesis options such as 3 oscillators, hard sync, X-Mod, PWM, et al. But you practically need a pair of tweezers to edit all of these parameters.

As on the original Minimoog, the envelopes are 3 stage. These are annoying. With so many other modern features would it have killed Studio Electronics to include ADSR envelopes?

I could live with all of these shortcomings. However, the sound of the SE-02 leaves much to be desired. The bass is nice and deep although turning up the resonance kills the low end. But the top end has an annoying "fizziness" to it. I found myself constantly rolling off the top end with the filter to get rid of that fizz. But then the SE-02 just sounds dull.

Maybe my unit was defective. Whatever the cause, my SE-02 did not have a smooth, musical top end.

Thanks for the insights guys. Please note that this is a post from 2020. You are welcome to continue the thread if you like, but don t do it for me....

Did you purchase it in the end @stefken ? - For the others that are interested: I've written a review about the SE-02. It might be interesting to some people. Consider yourself invited to give it a read here:
