I would subscribe to every one of them and then, not make music with any of them.

It's an equally unlikely scenario as all DAWs going subscription.
Someone needs a hobby or to learn how to find the Off Topic forum.

technically it is about DAWs though and ftr, it is music related so if gets moved it would be to everything else, not off topic
Everything Else is the forum I linked to. Off Topic, Everything Else either one. I don't follow either sub-forum so stuff like this wouldn't show in my feed. I'm not the only or the first member to make a comment about this thread.

Yes the thread has DAW in the title but it's not a realistic discussion. The odds that all DAWs will go subscription is minuscule.

Oh well it's not a big deal but pointless threads like this one are why I'm spending less and less time at KVR.....

you allow something pointless to have such control over you? Just curious, who held the gun to your head to get you to read past the title? Judging by your response you already knew what you were getting into by the name of the topic starter, you chose to continue.

The fact is, we will never see all DAWs go to subscription-only unless the market demanded it, in which case we'd all be paying for subscriptions because we've all decided as a market that that's what we want. If the market decides we don't want subscriptions, then the developers who aren't sub-only will survive and thrive and the sub-only developers will die off or survive on those who are OK with subscriptions. So, the real question is, what will we do when the free market disappears and the answer is, we have no idea because that won't happen in our lifetimes.... hopefully

As long there is Open Source, I would compile my own DAW with Blackjack and hookers based on any of this :
Ardour
Audacity
Audiotool
LMMS
MusE
Qtractor
Rosegarden
Traverso DAW
Ubuntu Studio
Chaotic
DarkWave Studio
Frinika
Macaw
Musagi
Open Octave
Psycle
Jeskola Buzz
MuLab-Free
Tracktion
Zryhtm

No, I would (to my great shame) go hardware only.

Us oldsters have been through a lot of phases: a couple of used reel-to-reels was 1; Yamaha cassette 4-track was 2; ADAT was 3; Roland VS ecosystem was 4; and finally itb when it was affordable.

I still have a Tascam 24 track; and an ancient Roland VS2480.

Refuse to deal with any DAW subscriptions and don’t like any of the open source software? That’s crazy imho but it still isn’t a fatal scenario: Relatively inexpensive Hardware can keep you working even if you’re a project-level studio; although that’ll likely force you to be creative.

Subscriptions: I don’t unless it’s rent-to-own (currently getting Serum through Splice) - Bitwig is a subscription model about keeping their software current - and that’s perfectly fine with me because I can keep using Bitwig if I run into a $$$ crisis & can’t afford the update fee.

Subscriptions are nothing to be afraid of, imho - it’s just another option for the end-user.

Of course i'm old, but i actually don't see a desperate need for more.
DAWs are so good these days (actually have been for a decade or even longer) that most stuff is just some luxury that's not at all a requirement for even the highest standards

Of course subscriptions are not the devil, but they usually are more expensive in the long run, unless you are buying everything simply because it's new anyway, which of course is the goal.
Rent to own would actually be an option even for me, but i'm set with my stuff so no actual need for that aswell.

I would just switch to Linux and use the free open source stuff . I dont believe it will all go to subscription , I think all companies will sell there licenses for software and then have a subscription based model with added extra stuff . Ex. Like Reason+ and Presonus Sphere .
