Since the i7 series first came out, I haven't had any particular issues provided that I turn off everything that I'm not using on my system. I am curious about my new build and how the new Intel chips will behave with two different types of core. I'd try to have as little running on your system as possible to keep things tight and stable. Along with a decent soundcard you should have very few problems.Synthack wrote: Sun Jan 02, 2022 11:05 pmIt is not difficult, but what is difficult i found is fine-tuning it via updates etc. I mean really researching your hardware and seeing if there are any conflicts with other hardware etc.Ah_Dziz wrote: Fri Dec 31, 2021 2:10 am Doing your own build is not very difficult and can save you money/ get you more for your money. I'm finalizing one to order tomorrow so I can write it off my taxes. Basically the more the merrier. I would go with a fractal design tower since there are crazy quiet and spacious along with being well designed. You'll have room for whatever you want in there. For CPU and ram buy the best/ most you can afford. I dunno much about VR and how it interacts with GPU and such but a very fast processor is not going to hurt you for that sort of thing and will help with production. I would budget 2500 for a strong computer. You can make a beast if you build it yourself and you can buy something off the shelf that is pretty solid.
Not all the developers will know what configuration you have and that could be problematic and then when you have a bug you will have to really experiment to report it.
I usually hate macs for all the same reasons the pc crowd does, but what i do enjoy is that the hardware usually has a pretty solid track record because it's all the same from computer to computer.
No idea how that translates into software development for the platform though. I might be way off here.
Is this a good price for a new production computer?

Top post to keep in mind is from Pictus.
He posted a list of PC components with prices that are hard to impossible to beat. Since it's fallen back on page 1, I want to re-post it for new comers.

The new "Alder Lake" chips have "p" cores and "e" cores. The Performance cores are full on hyperthreaded (2 logical cores per) at higher clock speeds the Economy cores have lower speeds, no hyperthreading and lower energy use. The idea is that the "e" cores run background stuff and simple OS functions, while the "p" cores run the big CPU eating processes.
I'm curious how it's going to work in practice. From early users I'm hearing that the 6x4 core i5 with a nice overclock is the best balance of processing to power usage/ heat while also being very affordable. The cores can be run up to 5 GHz on a nice air cooler.
I went with the Alder Lake I5, 128 GB ram, 12 TB Samsung Ssds, a big fat Fractal design case and a 1000W modular antec power supply. Gotta stick with onboard graphics for now.

1000watts ! 12 terabytes ! Lazy cores and hyper cores !
Who needs 12 TBs besides maybe servers?
Is this a home gaming PC your building?

Yeah, OK, I still think it's excessive, but no matter.
My 2001 PC build was dual raid 0. I think they were around 73gigs each.
I had to work @ 44.1 x 16 but never filled them and I make ambient electronic music 20 minutes per track.
...anyway, if you want to see the coolest advertisement for Varjo's cloud virtual/mixed reality metaverse layout check it out below...if not for the VR, for the cool electronic music.

For a graphics card with active cooling: yes, that may consume 100W easily. Perhaps 250W, but that's silly territory.Synthack wrote: Tue Jan 04, 2022 3:53 am 1000 watts is pretty good to have if you are planning on adding like a powerful graphics cards or PCI-E Audio card to your rig.
For an audio card: no, that should not consume more than 5W.
Allocate 450W for the mobo, plus whatever your GPU demands and 50W for all the other peripherals. It used to be the case that lots of harddisks (the spinning type) add significantly to the power needs. Just look up the specs of the components. This is not rocket science. With a nickname like Annode you should know that

cooler may or may not perfect fit the motherboard in the default orientation.
Will need the free LGA-1700 adapter, the NM-i17xx-MP83

I became aware of the Be quiet! cases and considering I will be using mics on acoustic instruments at times, a quiet running case is foremost.legendCNCD wrote: Tue Jan 04, 2022 1:33 pm https://www.bequiet.com/en/psucalculator seems quite good
@Pictus The Fractal case looks great for cooling, but not so much for noise.
Just to be clear to everyone, it's not me who is wanting the 1000w PSU.
@BertKoor Yes, my name is annode for a reason.

@Pictus
Thanks for the warning and workaround.
Loving the PcPartPicker site. Even though the component list is in itself a great build, I still want to learn more about builds details before I do the deed.
Thanks for those Kenny vids, but without being able to understand what he's saying, it does me no good.

Enable YouTube CC(Closed Captions) and in the Settings set it to Auto Translate to English

Look a the noise normalized results, because it has a very good airflow theannode wrote: Tue Jan 04, 2022 6:14 pm @Pictus The Fractal case looks great for cooling, but not so much for noise.
bios can set the fans to run at lower RPM and keep the system more silent.
Another interesting option is the Fractal Define 7(not the compact), its front
door is a second layer for noise management, but if you are going to keep
the door open for better cooling, best the Meshify.
Well, keep the Fractal 7 door open and only close when recording...
Or keep it closed and only open if the CPU/GPU gets too hot...
IF you are going to use air cooler + Fractal 7, can substitute all fans
for a more efficient/silent model and not expensive, Arctic P14.
They sell 5 for a good price, place 3 in the case front and 1 in the back.

Want to have the *ultimate* cool/silent PC?
Use a custom water kit and place the pump/radiator into another room.
Can also use a water block for the GPU, but have to verify which are the
compatible models.

Or a more customizable model.

Thanks again Pictus !
Your suggestions are logical and I see they will be best for me.
Controlling the fans speed is a definite for me to suppress the noise. I installed a variable voltage regulator w/the potentiometer on the case front for this purpose in my 2001 build. I also may just buy a case like the Fractal 7 and do install whatever sound deadening material myself.
With longer hoses, I don't see any reason the radiator can't be outside of the case...no? Then it can be deadened independently and also not contribute noise and heat to the case? EDIT - OK, I see you posted links to components for customizations !!! EDIT2 - WOW! This is like Frankenstein science! haha
Lots to think about for me. I've watched vids from 'Gamer's Nexus'. He is very knowledgeable but even slowing him down some his presentation style confuses me. He rattles off numbers without displaying them graphically. These model numbers aren't familiar to me, so it's all too confusing. I can find someone else more my speed...there's lots to choose from.
Right now I'm just watching it all to get used to it, then later watch it again to write down final choices. Your help is valuable to me and I consider these pages important in my final decisions.
My sister is cathode and my cat is pentode.

EDIT - Oh and thanks...now I have the English CC. Shame that the font size is so small.

A bit off topic, but for your entertainment here is a demonstration of the computer AI technique used to separate the individual sounds (vocal/speech, guitars, bass, drums) from a single mono mic'd recording of the Beatles 'Get Back' series. It's quite striking. I have never seen anything even close to how discreet this is.
This vid should be que'd to just before it is shown.(if it isn't go to 1:24.06) There is a second demonstration soon after, so wait for them to show it.
