so he finally gets to be an authentic icon, with the authentic ingenuine stuff and everything.
I thought he was genuinely artificial...

80s British underground/pop star made famous for playing synths, fretless bass (I think he may have invented it?), wearing make up and crashing light aircraft, currently experiencing a bit of a renaissance...

I saw him at the Leeds festival a few years ago. He was far and away the surprise highlight of the festival (but then Leeds is dreadful).

OK now I remember. UGH! I hated that stuff. But AFAIK Jaco Pastorius "invented" or at least pioneered the fretless electric bass.

Numan, was a synthpop pioneer, you can't take that away from him. In a late 70's chart full of 2 tone, mod revivalists and the dregs of punk, 'Are Friends electric' rose like a saviour. Quoting JG Ballards lyrics word for word only made it more cool.

From there, 'The Pleasure Principal' and then the awesome 'Telekon', make up as good a chronological triumvate of albums as ANY musican has ever released.

He then went off down the liquid bass route, using Mick Karn (God of all liquid bass) on 'She's Got claws', and to much better effect, Pino Palladino on 'Chameleons' and 'We Take Mystery'. (Just sheer genius basslines).

He's had his critics over the years, but he had/has a knack of taking electronic music to its base level, and pumping out great melodies and memorable riffs. And his autobiog IS hilarious. Basically, he blames everyone for the publics' general perception of him. "My name is Gary Webb. I'm really a nice bloke, ya know". etc etc.

Now that you mention, is the song 'Light Aircraft on Fire' by the Auteurs about Gary Numan?
