Kilohearts Multipass w/ their saturation snap-ins (they have a few) can get you good MB saturation. Also Shaperbox's drive shaper is an option

One often overlooked but i quite like is Neutron and Ozones Exciter. Not as powerful as Saturn (with modulation), but sounds as good IMO.

KClip also does multiband - distortion quite well.

That's also what I wondered. The "quality" of the distortion algorithms would be more important to me than the fine control features around it. So would Saturn 2 sound better than Neutron or Ozone Exciter? Or Shaperbox?

I'm not sure if I have sufficient good hearing / experience to really judge this well.

I have a lot of them. Dent 2/Indent 2 and Bluecat Destructor rule them all.

Saike Filther is an authority in the Reaper JSFX realm. You'll be surprised. He creates awesome plugins.
But minus the MB part, has to be done by other plugs.

You can also build your own using multiple channels in your DAW, then simply filtering the various channels as you please.

Saturn is a very nice package, quite a few algorithms for different tastes of distortion and saturation, and multiband and all the modulation FF is known for. There are plugins that do one or the other but not all together.

I was trying to think of a substitute for Saturn and the closest I could think was the aforementioned Minimal Rift 2. But Rift isn't really that close an option. Others I can think of are Arturia Coldfire and Output Thermal... maybe... also not enough over-lap with Saturn 2 features to be considered close. Maybe look for a used copy or wait for a good sale....

It's mainly the distortion and saturation that I want. The modulation is interesting but for my application a basically static but beefed up sound is the aim. Saturn may be doing things I don't need (or do I?). Anyway, am going to demo Coldfire, I've a number of other Arturia products which I really dig so we shall see.

I never really liked Saturn for some reason and have yet to upgrade it from version 1,
same with their volcano filter.

If you're not that bothered about modulation then you really need to check out the Zener in DMG TrackComp 2. As well as being my workhorse compressor (the only one I use ITB now), it's pretty much the only distortion/saturation plugin I use. Dave's quality, DSP coding and all that :D :tu:

If you are after quality, also consider Voxengo:

Commercial plugins also available. Saturation quality is top notch.

Saturn 2's claim to fame is probably it's ability to be such a chameleon. It can do so many things relatively effortlessly. It's a great compressor, EQ, mojo plugin, destruction plugin, creative plugin, advanced panner/stereo field manipulator, multiband ducker, dynamic EQ, bass or treble enhancer etc.

It can do so many things. It's one of those great utility plugins to have lying around due to the way you can side-chain the various modulators from any of the multi-bands or any external signal.
