But what IS "workflow"?

If Apple find out that you are using a mouse with more than one button, they will confiscate your Mac.putte wrote:workflow, on a computer, is to me that i can do what i want in the fastest time possible.
logic statisfies me in this quite well, with all the screensets, key-commands and configured 8-button mouse (start, stop, toolbox, solo-mode, cut, etc ..)
i rarely have to go into menu´s and stuff.

I think that if you try a few different tools and find out which one allows you to get the most done in a given time, that should be a reasonable indicator. Maybe spend a whole evening with each and see what clicks. [Sounds like some sad reality show or other, really.]DaveL60 wrote:but I haven't really sat back and thought about how I want to / like to / need to work. Some years back, my wife was an alumni participant alongside undergrads in a MechE design contest at our alma mater. The students had ready access to CAD systems, with lovely computer-plotted output. When my wife unrolled her drawings, which she'd done "the old fashioned way," there were a lot of "wow, did you really draw that by hand?" reactions. She took the oppotunity to pull some legs, explaining how she'd used a new "graphite deposition printer" which was user friendly, point-and-click, platform and OS independent, etc., etc. She was, of course, describing a mechanical pencil but she really had the students going while the profs and the machine shop manager were working really hard to keep a straight face in the background.Steven West wrote:Something like a 'Mobile Lead Inscriber Untensil'... That's a great idea. Unfortunately, it requires a week of free evenings.BONES wrote:I think that if you try a few different tools and find out which one allows you to get the most done in a given time, that should be a reasonable indicator. I'll probably get there, but I think it's navel contemplation first, then download and test. I'd actually had a thought something along those lines, thinking that I ought to do a complete song in each of ACID, n-Track, CMuzys, and Tracktion and see how I felt about working in each. Better comparison, even, if I did the same song in each, but who wants to do the same song over and over and over.
Ultimately I think I'm more of an audio guy than a MIDI guy, so I guess I'll wind up favoring a host that does that well. I have already bumped up against the lack of punch-in capabilities in ACID working on my current track.
Also, I wanted to specifically thank Rabid for some good thoughts in his post (1st page). I'd started to do some template creation along the lines he described, trying to setup a starting point project in CMuzys that gave me a ready track for all 16 MIDI channels on my GM keyboard; I got it sorta half-way done, ought to go back and complete the job, I guess.

Yeah, you're not alone here - I've been "undecided" about a host forever. Music's totally a hobby for me, an on-again off-again one at that, and I think I spend more time worrying about whether or not I have the best software for what I want to do than actually making music.
I've been using cakewalk/sonar for a long time, and got a mac with logic audio a while back to play with (I got the mac for other reasons and wanted to try logic after hearing so much about it); and after playing with those, plus the cubase and live demos, I've come to the conclusion that none of them are "perfect". I like cubase's handling of vst's the best, but I hear so much about it's (lack of) stability that I'm leery of crossgrading; logic has some cool midi features, but it's expensive, and committing to mac as a platform is expensive too. I like sonar in general but I've found the VST adapter can be a little flaky. Live is the only one that really has a different way of doing things, and I need to play with the demo a little more before I decide if I like it or not.
Either way - it's easy to get lost in all the little quirks, and forget that they're all lightyears ahead of the 4-track cassette recorders I started off on! I mean, programming a sequence on my keyboard workstation (ouch), recording it to tape, then having one track left for guitars so I could bounce to the fourth track and overdub vocals on the first three... yikes. Sure, they didn't "crash", but geez, that's some workflow for ya!

Sure, now that you've told the world! Seriously, how long do you think that they will continue to believe that Mac users are too stoopid to use more than one mouse button? because that, apparantly, was the reason they took two buttons off the original Xerox-parc design.

Seriously, Apple's one button mouse paradigm is as lame as it could get.
Really makes you wonder how a pretty much well-crafted machine such as the latest G5s (yes, they ARE well-crafted I have to admit) comes with such a piece of utter shit. Their new mice are even worse than the old ones (loads of accidental clicks) and I don't know ANY Mac user indeed using them.
Makes you wonder even more, knowing that OSX (the only OS running on the latest G5 series) is actually supporting right click context menus.
It might be stupid, but (apart from the ridiculous price) this is one of the little things that still makes me think they're not exactly living in this world at Apple (and don't even remind me of "finder"...).

Glass flows too... and thats some hard shit.
As for workflow....
I used to work as a bitch at a local radio station. If the engineer went on holiday I would fill in for him. The best thing about this is the fact that it was a small-ish station and they had heaps of analog stuff! 2x2 track Otari's, 1x8 track Otari, a Record player! (and sample libraries on VINYL!) and little fucken cart machines (I'm too tired to explain). (Plus a cd player and just b4 I left they got a stinkass Pc based cart system)
Work flow in that place was a good and measurable thing, from reciept of copy to the finished product everything was physical and involved movement and interaction with other ppl and all the above equipment. I think we forget what work actually is when we sit in front of our pcs and prattle on about mouse buttons and "where shall I put the third monitor."
My summation is this:
Britney Spears has nice breasts.

From what I can tell... workflow is the way things would go if you didn't have the "workflow" thing to work around.Chickenman wrote:
