Since it appears you are definitely going to purchase "Rain Dogs", I won't bother recommending it...

My second suggestion is "Frank's Wild Years"!

(which is much better than "Swordfishtrombones" IMHO)

and more votes for "Mule Variations" please! Especially if you dig his real out-there stuff (compared to the Asylum years kinda stuff)

To choose ONE Tom Waits' album is like to choose THE book you'll have at home. For some tottaly different views I would suggest 'Heartattack and Wine' and 'Frank's Wild Years', but 'Rain Dogs' is a good album too.

I had it on tape and kept it in my car for several years - it's now almost unrecognizable...

My favorites:
Early Years vol 2: a nice collection of his earlier, folk-jazz situation.

Bone Machine: a great album (didn't it win a Grammy?) that, like Doom 3, I found to be pretty scary. I had a hard time listening to it all the way through for a long time.

Black Rider: the result of a very successful collaboration; music from a musical adapted from a German-style grotesque fairy tale.

Mule Variations: I feel this sums up a certain era of his music that I really have enjoyed. It's one of those albums that sounds like a classic album early on, like the first couple times you hear it.

However, I agree with everyone else's recommendations as well. In general, though, I particularly liked it when he got all noisy and creepy. (Although this may describe many of his phases, actually.)

Edit: By the way, my recommendation if you don't know if you like the album you chose is to go out and get more. Just keep getting more of them. Seriously.

I heard alot of Tom Waits at friends houses, and on music videos. But the only one I was ever compelled to buy was Bone Machine as well. And certainly didn;t regret it.

Just the fact Tom and Keith Richards sing together is almost as good as James Brown and Bob Dylan in a poetic Rap Off.

But seriously, Keith and Tom are pretty good together, and it's a really well rounded album. All of Tom's are.

I second Closing Time and Mule Variations. Tom is simply amazing.

I also recommend Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave if you end up liking Tom Waits.

I have to cast my votes to Bone Machine ( the lyrics are so great and showcase the strange world of Tom Waits) and Mule Variations, I really love the arraingements and instrumentation on these two discs, very well done production also.

Rain Dogs is absolutely brilliant, quite possibly his best. After that, I'd go for Bone Machine. Gotta say I much prefer avant garde clanking Waits (a la Bone Machine) to bluesy Waits (stuff like Blue Valentine). Rain Dogs has a bit of both though.

I don't think I'm the only one who says that, he seems to have been *very* influential.

Little known fact, the girl on the cover of Blue Valentine is Rickie Lee Jones.
