I have it but haven't used it much. Probably the most no nonsense aggressive limiter I've ever heard.
Best compressor for snares?

Usually no compression needed on snare drum samples. Often no treatment needed.
What are people after, more thwack less body, less thwack more body? It all depends.
Transient plugins, distortion saturation in parallel, individual snare reverb, slap back type delays, volume envelopes, layering different samples. Many options.

Thanks DCrown! I forgot I even had that thing for many years. Too many plugins. I'll have to dig it out again. I remember it being extremely fast and spanky but I guess it wasn't what I was looking for at the time.DCrown wrote: Sat Nov 30, 2024 7:41 pm BSS DPR-402

Anything fast and snappy. Load a few in and compare them, choose the one that best matches the aesthetics for the project. Then do the same again for the next project.

Colored / huge snare: Softube and UAD have Valley People Dynamite emulations, and there are a bunch of Neve 33609 (or similar diode bridge style) plugins (my preference being Lindell Audio 254E).
Snappy : Any of the good dbx 160 emulations for bringing out attack.

Why are many people here looking for a fast compressor? What kind of snare material or snare sound are you after?
For real snare drums, a fast comrpessor will make it lose its smack and punch and will only put it further back in the mix. What you need is most likely a long attack... at least for the kind of music i know...

Snakes can be aggressive. 1176. Long attack time. If it's a rattle snake then all buttons in.

Snails are slow. Opto. That long release gives a good smear. Done.

My favorite snare drum sound is only found on records from the late 70s and early 80s. I don't see how there's one "sound of snare drums for the past 50+ years". Can you please elaborate?

The 1176 is still the studio standard compressor for snares for a reason. Mostly because of the super fast attack and because it is the sound of snare drums for the past 50+ years.
Selling: Softube custom bundle; Zynaptiq Wormhole
