yepp +1 to Cubase 6.5, Logic 10.2 was also pretty decent

the last couple of versions before the final flattening looked good

I loved the new look of cubase sx back in the day .
ffw 2024 , Renoise is (near ) perfect
Eyeball exchanging
Soul calibrating ..frequencies

My favourites (Those that I spent some time or a long time with):
- Cubase SL1 (lesser version of SX1), Cubase 6 and somehow Cubase 12. (using now v13)
- Logic 4 and 5 (PC) and Logic 9 (Mac). Logic 11 is ok but not a top favourite. (using now v11)
- Live 12 (is the best among Lives) (using it now as my main DAW).
- Reason 4/5 and lately Reason 13 (using v13)
- S1 v2 (I like that version a lot) (I have v6 but not using it)
- Sonar 4 till Sonar 8 (included), busy but I like it much better than the X versions.
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

I stopped using Reason around ver. 3. I really liked the UI of 2.5 - simple and made sense (well to me it did anyways).

I loved Logic 5. Not for it's overall workflow, per se, but for it's ability to stuff a crap ton of GUI onto a 1024x768 screen. Once Apple took over mid-6, it's been downhill ever since.
I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better? :(

With v3, v4, v5 they added Kong drums, combinator and Thor (don't remember which one for which version) but I think they kept the same GUI. I didn't jump into v6 but I returned at v7 and kept with it till now (not my first DAW though).

I started my computer music with Logic 4 on PC and I loved the interface, so futuristic and well done. I kept with v5 till I moved from Win 98 to Win 2000 and the problems began. So, I moved to Cubase SL/SX and kept there for a long time then Sonar 4 and kept jumping between DAWs till now! :hihi:
Anyway, Logic 11.1 is really good. When I'm on Mac, I use it besides Live 12 and Reason 13.

Still, GUI, although it is very important, it is not the main factor for me in choosing my DAW(s). Stabiliy and workflow come first.

As far as favorite, Maybe Reason 3.0.4... All downhill from there as well-

You like the brighter 90s- early 00s look.

Those colors gave me headaches.

One of my favorite PC sequencers in the 90s was Trax. It was a Black and White GUI. I appreciate the blank slate look.

Ableton comes the closest now and is one of my favorite DAW GUI.

I've always loved Reason's look. That is...the "Reason Rack" look. Not so much the other parts of the GUI which are inconsistent with the Rack. Consistency is one of the things I love about Ableton Live. It seems like one giant instrument.

I use Logic Pro for various reasons, but I prefer the UI of Ableton (up to v11) and Reaper 7. I customize the arrangement view of Reaper to be as simple, clutter free, and monochromatic as possible. I can’t concentrate well when the UI is filled with multiple colors and bright white text. I also prefer Ableton’s mixer view over any other DAW. It’s incredible simple and clutter free, and I love the color scheme. I tend to get more work done when mixing in Ableton.

My fav was Logic Pro 7. It’s been downhill from there.

The only best looking interfaces globally are the new trend of Fabfilter plugins (in particular R2 and Q4).

Serum obviously considering his age was a quantum leap forward.
With you 100% on Bitwig's UI.. but not so much on Serum or Fabfilter UI, don't actively dislike those, I just don't love them.
It's funny though I haven't seen a single one of those hacky custom themes for Bitwig that I've liked. Default Bitwig all the way.

I also really like Samplitude/Sequoia's dark theme a lot, much more than the Birdline skins. I just wished Magix had left color gradients for objects from before X7 or whenever was.

I love that fabfilter gives so much visual feedback. Despite the "trust your hears" extremists, there is value in seeing what you hear.
But I agree that the usability can be hit or miss.
ProQ4 is a hit, timeless3 kind of miss.

Guess I must be one of those "trust your ears guys" :D

I am more a "whatever works for you" guy he he, so we are not in opposite side.

But personally, I only trust my ears at the beginning of a session and supported by A/B testing. Rest of the time, whatever assistance I can have is welcomed.
