I'll drop in molecularbytes atomic transient - I was not thinking of it as a gate but it can be and better than most transient processors it allows great control over the envelope - either imposing an ADSR or using the existing envelope. And it does this across three individually determined bands.
Doesn't get much love here but is a very sophisticated and powerful bit of kit

Probably a tie between MDynamics, Waves C1, and +spectral gate. It's more of an expander but the built in "gate" in rVox gets quite a bit of use.
I use V1 most of the time on guitars/vocals/anything that's got a decently loud noise floor before extreme distortion or other similar processing. If I want to get really crazy I just edit the recording to have no signal at all where I don't want it. rVox is my go-to for any live mic or DI tracking into the daw that requires monitoring. It's used as a sort of generic "sound goodener" and preamp. MDynamics and it's multiband version are great workhorses and I mostly use them on trickier sources/ recordings from client's home studios. Outside of an adjustable floor, there are very few gate plugins I've ever seen that can't get the job done. It's more a question of ease of use.

Very rarely use them aside from the occasional tracking or as an effect. ReaGate or something i put in Reaktor.

I am mostly using gates for real drums, and there is nothing better than Black Salt Audio Silencer or THR DeBleed. These two basically do the same, but vastly different (and better) than any gate before. Eliminates bleeding like a charm.
For any other material, i moslty use Pro-G but it really doesnt matter that much.

No fave, but DMG Trackgate seems okay (if I ever need it).

Big Beautiful Door is just amazing to get rid of cymbal bleed in toms and other drums.concealed identity wrote: Mon Dec 30, 2024 3:59 pm I recently bought a plugin from Boz Digital called Big Beautiful Door. It's kind of a combination gate/dynamic EQ. I've already used it and feel like it's going to get used quite a bit, since I generally really like the smoothness of having things get filtered as they're being gated.

The option to EQ the "open" and "closed" parts separately makes it super versatile (also for sound design). Also its detection circuit is the best I've encoutered in the last years and the gating sounds smooth.

Agreed. I just grabbed the upgrade to version 2 for $10 and now I can use it on my Mac natively!AGIGA wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 4:08 pm Big Beautiful Door is just amazing to get rid of cymbal bleed in toms and other drums.

I tried Silencer and didn't like what it did to the transient of the drums. The Main Event wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 6:54 am I am mostly using gates for real drums, and there is nothing better than Black Salt Audio Silencer or THR DeBleed. Nice, thanks. Didn't realise the Marquis Comp had a gate as well. If it's good, it might be a more practical alternative to Voxformer.e@rs wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 9:37 am Expurgate, but I also like the ones in Marquis Compressor and Voxformer.

Yeah, on Silencer you gotta be subtle with the parameters, too much debleeding will affect the initial sound too much. I would suggest trying the THR Debleed, its a more refined version of Black Salt Audio.AGIGA wrote: Wed Jan 01, 2025 12:59 amI tried Silencer and didn't like what it did to the transient of the drums. The Main Event wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 6:54 am I am mostly using gates for real drums, and there is nothing better than Black Salt Audio Silencer or THR DeBleed.
