One doesn't need theory to write music. Theory is mainly for jammers and visual communication. I've learned tunes on the piano solely by ear. Zero lessons and zero theory knowledge.
[/quote]
Obviously. But you cannot technically 'write' music without theory. And you can't learn an instrument to any significant level of proficiency without absorbing some theory. An example: I learned chord inversions on the organ when I was 9-10. When I picked up the guitar, as soon as I learned the basic chord shapes, I sussed out inversions on the guitar. That would've been @ around 2-3 months of playing. I remember that impressing my brother. I didn't know the technical name 'inversion' but I understood the concept well enough.
All that with a chord chart, LPs, and that's it. I was never among the 'cool' crowd in highschool, where there were other guitarists and keyboardists. I am pretty much an auto-didact.

can people stop bemoaning the next generation.
our elders did that, and they were wrong then too.
yes, some people cant be bothered with music theory, many still can.
dont base everything on the two nephews you know.

Thank you for sharing your story. I hope we older folks are not just relics from a bygone era.

If someone had the time to check out the message thread, then they had time to spare for which to go down a rabbit hole. If they consider it to have been a waste, then that's on them, not me. It's not like the title was completely misleading, such as, "Making music that will attract sexual partners."seangm wrote: Sun Aug 03, 2025 5:05 pmGetting someone to click on click bait counts for nothing except you wasted someone's time.tonedef71 wrote: Sun Aug 03, 2025 2:56 am Well, at the very least, it engendered enough interest for you to open the thread and respond. Given the state of the world, the baby-boomers didn't do a very good job as parents. The Boomers used to be referred to 'The Me Generation.' I am actually very disappointed in my generation. I can understand younger people being disappointed and pissed off at us, too.cryophonik wrote: Sun Aug 03, 2025 6:08 pm Raising GenZ’s is hard, so why bother?

If you're really not smart enough to understand the title was click bait then I don't know what to tell you, you seem really clueless or in denial. Either way good thing there is an ignore feature because I don't have to interact with winners like you here.tonedef71 wrote: Sun Aug 03, 2025 7:04 pmIf someone had the time to check out the message thread, then they had time to spare for which to go down a rabbit hole. I understand and interact with the world differently from neurotypical folks. In this instance, I simply recycled the title from the original blog article and then left a comment mentioning that I thought that the author made some good points in it. I'm not sure why some folks seem to have taken umbrage to this thread.seangm wrote: Sun Aug 03, 2025 7:42 pm If you're really not smart enough to understand the title was click bait then I don't know what to tell you, you seem really clueless or in denial.
*PHEW* I'm glad that you consider me to be a winner and not a loser. Thank you!seangm wrote:Either way good thing there is an ignore feature because I don't have to interact with winners like you any more.

Ha, no, making music is still hard. It is harder than ever.
From the article:
Making music today is ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE.
From the article:
They don't make music. They make garbage. They turn music into garbage. On an industrial scale. No need for learning, practising, or even patience. A complete beginner can use AI to make a song (and the cover art too), then upload it to Spotify. All before breakfast.
Making music today is ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE.

I would like to learn more about what you have to say about this topic. Please elaborate further.lobanov wrote: Sun Aug 03, 2025 8:15 pm Ha, no, making music is still hard. It is harder than ever.

I certainly am guilty of leveraging generative AI to create unique cover art for a track. What it produces almost always comes out better than any of the image collages I have made previously, and because I make music simply as a hobby, I cannot really justify hiring a graphic artist to create exclusive cover artwork for me.the article wrote:(and the cover art too)

Thank you for apologizing, maybe do better next time. And I am neurodivergent also and I don't post clickbait nonsense. Try maybe not using the neurodivergent sympathy card next time. That is all, continue on with your wonderful thread.
