Agreed, Neold Oldtimer is a bit of a gem. It might not stand up against many of the suggestions in this thread when it comes to features, but if you're looking for something that just works and adds character out the box, it's a must have.kraster wrote: Sat Nov 08, 2025 10:53 pm A few other notables are objeq delay (physical modelling thingy), modley by Klevgrand (more feedback effects shenanigans), delay cat (concatenator, granular weirdness), indelay (surround capable with tons of taps), daedalus delay (granular with lots of other unusual features), Neold Oldtimer (wonderful sounding delay with a digital or analog character), Other Desert Cities (tons of delay modes and other features like diffusion), wires (Soviet wire recorder based thing with delay capabilities)

vcv rack is part of my vst delay collection... Anything modular where you can coome up with unique stuff is good for extending a delay collection fairly quickly. Being able to load other vst's also makes for a killer vst effect forgive me for not menitioning the name of it...

Klevgrand modley is cool. You can add modular effects pre, post and within the loop - including another delay. The only glaring omission is ducking. Cubase has a similar stock delay.

Lots of great suggestions here, including things i don't have but i know are great.
Reaktor is amazing when you get into it (or just get something premade) I had all kinds of "feedback machines" that i made.
PSP285, PSPMD608, PSP Echo, Valhalla Delay are some of my favorites.
M4L has some wild stuff.
Bitwig (as already covered well in this thread) definitely,
Sandman Pro (i don't have the last two but great stuff.
We are spoiled in the virtual world, i remember when we had to walk uphill both ways and were lucky if we could afford a crappy BBD (or eventually a Digitech 7.6 -crappy 8 bit)

I’m dating myself but the first digital delay I came across was the powertran digital delay line that my dad had.CrystalWizard wrote: Sun Nov 09, 2025 7:05 am Lots of great suggestions here, including things i don't have but i know are great.

It came as a kit and in order to get anything long enough you’d have the already paltry sample rate of 11 kHz to 4K!

It had a huge discount when I bought it. Don’t think it’s worth the normal list price, as good as it is.morphex wrote: Sat Nov 08, 2025 10:17 pmZen Delay is quite a trip, and very flexible!!hey212 wrote: Sat Nov 08, 2025 9:27 pmWow somehow I completely missed the fact that a plugin version of Zen Delay exists, thanks for the heads up!vitocorleone123 wrote: Sat Nov 08, 2025 9:00 pm For 3rd party I'm down to just 5 delays depending on what's needed: Valhalla Delay, Recirculate, Zen Delay, Sigmund v2, and Echoleffe. It's been awhile, and I've yet to think "I need a different delay" beyond these.

I mostly experiment with destructive effects, distortion, bit and rate reduction, filters, time based modulation. Anything. It works better when the effect is medium to light, but the feedback is moderate and easily heard in the mix. Good for introductions, breaks, fade-outs. Places where it can be featured. Minimal ambient tracks as well.swilow11 wrote: Sat Nov 08, 2025 10:25 pmSound advice. When I first started using this, I assumed it was applying FX simply to the wet signal so I thought I'd make an awesome dub delay with a wobbling resonant band pass filter. This just not the case as I discovered very quickly! Some sort of kill switch would be good here.zerocrossing wrote: Sat Nov 08, 2025 12:26 amSomeone turned me on to that a while ago, and it was quite a revelation. Make sure you put a limiter after it, because thinks can get out of control pretty easily.Korg Supporter wrote: Fri Nov 07, 2025 7:09 pmI've had Bitwig for a couple of years, and I have never noticed that before!zerocrossing wrote: Fri Nov 07, 2025 5:27 pm There are really too many to speak of, and other threads that have gone into them. Before you go buy something, check out what comes with your DAW. For example, I use Bitwig, and its delays and reverbs have the ability to add plugins inside the feedback loop, creating incredible opportunities to sculpt your delay.
It helped me understand what was happening though.
I have to admit, I haven't found a truly useful purpose for it. I'm curious what sort of setups you've stumbled across using the FX chain in the various delays.
