OS can be very important when you collaborate with different people

Nobody has the exact same hardware, software and configuration. The smallest differences can make a plugin crash or fail to load, I've seen that plenty of times. Using plain audio and MIDI files is the way to go. Anything else is guaranteed to fail.

Personally I'm happy if a plugin is still compatible with Windows 7. It's nice to know that I can still fall back on that if my Windows 11 test system doesn't turn out to work properly.

I use win 11, but it would be way better if everything remained no dependencies-win xp vst2 32-bit stuff.

That was the big boom, creative hosts for plugins since then, have not been so many.

Plus MS' updates have mucked up my system more than once.

They've been retiring a bunch of these useful tools lately. It looks like Microsoft is moving further away from helpful apps and moving more toward having users use the commandline....

How can an OS that is trying to shove down updates on you 24/7 can even be considered as a professional choice for music production? Windows wants you to be online all the time, even better logged into your account and their shop, so they can offer you the things you need. It is a consumer operating system telling you what to do, what to think and what to buy. On Mac this becomes a little more posh and elegant, yet also 'offering' you forced updates all day long. With Linux all you will get is a notification, which then includes info about which updates are security related. So now you become a user with absolute sovereignty over what your system will or can do. Now tell me, which is the very best OS for music production in these days.

Linux is a great OS but for music production it kinda sucks... i know we have Yabridge and Wine but
these don't offer 100% plugin compatibility. if Linux had support for native VST3 and CLAP support,
a huge amount of people might switch to Linux IMO.

Well, you've proved that only 3% of users here are on XP, which confirms that it's not worth wasting dev resources on. Mind you, that's 3% more than I'd have expected. I can't believe anyone could possibly be able to justify to themselves using a 25 year old operating system. You'd honestly have to have rocks in your head.

I have Win10 and 7 and use 7 more and most new plugins still run on Win7 like Cherry Audio, Korg Native, GForce, Avenger, U-he (even Zebra 3), Cableguys and many more.

Windows 7 is the worst version of Windows I've ever used. It's just Vista with a new frock, the underlying kernel is the same. I signed up as a Windows Beta tester so that I could get away from it, figuring that even an early beta couldn't possibly be as bad as Win7 (and it wasn't).

It is quite interesting too see how many people use older OS, every dev who ignores it loses money.

No, it's not and no, they don't. It costs money to support old OSes and it's money they'll never get back.

I don't really have any issues around old plugins. We moved from 32 bit to 64 bit in 2018 but if I want to open any old songs, I still have Orion 32 bit and all our old songs still open and play just fine, all the way back to our first album, which was released in 2003. I don't bother with installers for 32 bit plugins any more, I have them all saved in Orion's "VST Plugins" folder. Some open in demo mode but most seem to just work, 20+ years on with the latest beta version of Windows 11.

Stop using Windows Home. Pro gets you GPO's in which you can say "Updates only when I go to check and NOT from any other source on the internet". There, these are the 2 GPO's you want to set. Zero updates have come in 3 years soon to the audioPC or laptops automatically. Only if I go and press Search and then Update after it.

Vista Beta was _much_ _MUCH_ worse. We were GOLD partner so I could get my hands really early on everything as an IT-Admin. Vista ate 800MB memory from 1GB machine at the time and booted in several minutes, then opening anything was a swapfest... 7 beta was actually usable compared to it, I ran it on my laptops for some time, all of the bettafishes.

You might be surprised to learn some cool things about Linux that you were misinformed about. There are hundreds of Linux-native plugins nowadays. And, Linux has had support for VST3 for years. Furthermore, Linux had support for CLAP from day one.
