Want to purchase plugs with homoerotic GUIs and inferior/useless sound?
Me either.
AGREED.
Tobybear's plugs do tend to sound useless; consume way too much resources and feature ugly GUI's.

Toby's probably done more to encourage others to write native vst's (via his delphi port) than anyone I can think of. He did this while still at university.
If you two slags died today what would anyone say you added to the world?
I doubt anybody would even notice, let alone care.

Jack,

Let me exercise my right to free speech.

I may not have many posts but I've been lurking at KVR for years, and it never ceases to amaze me when people complain about FREE stuff, slag off the devs, complain about lack of features, etc. Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth...

If you don't like it, don't use it. If I ask your opinion about something, then tell me how you feel. Yes, you're allowed your free speech, but your statement about Toby coming out of the blue like that in an otherwise interesting and useful post serves no purpose and shows a lack of class and respect.

If you hadn't included that statement then this thread would be about the "other 99%" instead of all about your knocking Toby. Hopefully this has taught you something about tact...

100% agreed
i mean what is the point ? if you don't like it, just don't use it

the reasons to slag something
- your computer is slow and u can't handle cpu intensive plugs
- you enjoy creating anger and controversy .. much like an insurgent in iraq
- you are lazy and don't take the time to figure out the plugin so u bash it
- its just not for you

BUT if u don't like something just don't use it, there are plenty of willing people out there who WILL make GOOD use of your 'trash' :(

i haven't been at kvr that long, few months, and the bashing threads are appauling and so numerous ..really sad ...

easy to hide behind your pc and bash .. takes alot of courage

other than your bashing though, its actually a pretty useful post so thanks ... i guess...

If these are 'homoerotic' to you, then you've been in your closet too long.

Slight S&M vibe with "Shocker" but that's about it. Just kidding. Toby's a nice guy. How can you pick on someone who hugs a teddy bear and gives you free stuff? That's just MEAN!

Post

tobybear's stuff is cool.
i've got his "FunBag" collection (now all part of the MonsterBag) and there's loads of excellent, interesting and weird sounds to be had with those plugs.

I really enjoyed this little mini "article", controversy not withstanding. The Tobybear comment felt, to me, more like a journalistic jab than a troll (don't get me wrong here, I absolutely love mini-host). Anyway, there was quite a bit here in the way of effects that I was unfamiliar with.

I know we get "what's your favorite" or "best of" posts here all the time. It'd be nice to see more that are this fleshed out (and include the pretty pictures).

I am extensively using freewares and Jack ovelooked this "underrated"(??) developer:
http://www.northernbeat.com/
...especially his new one:
http://nb-audio.northernbeat.com/

Frewares from http://www.psychicmodulation.com/synth.html are good too, and do not forget that russian scene strikes back:

BUT!!!
I THINK THIS GUY HAS IT: http://miksybrandt.panicnow.net/downloads.htm

IMHO, I think this kind of posts are usefull to see what sound/design taste someone has, and probably a great info source for musicians to learn about some developers/VSTi`s, but making it "top of the pops" seems like "I am only authority here" statement to me and Jack really pushed it too much with statement about Tobybear.
Cool down, Jack.

Post

Well, I don't agree with bashing a developer that is putting their work out for free at all, but this thread has been useful. I now have some cool free Tobybear plugins. Thanks Tobybear! :hihi:

This is a good thread, as somebody else said we are beseiged with the 'Whats the best pugin to use on a Thursday?' type of threads, and while they give you a small buzz if you get a mention, ultimately (as a possible candidate) they end up being pretty meaningless as they are all based on opinions (as common as arseholes, apparently).

JackDark did something different, in as much as he gave us the reasons for his choices and attempted to group them meaningfully. This type of feedback is like oxygen and really helpful, even (or perhaps esspecially) if it is critical.. From my own point of view I am less than proud of some of my early GUI work (as an example). If I had been content to only listen to those that said that everything I did was magnificent then I would never have progressed.

It was rather a shame that lot of the replies to this thread concerned themselves with the Tobybear comment rather than follow JackDark's lead and post similar critiques.. (says me who hasn't posted a critique either :D )

Post

...i'm all for critiques. there is a Review Section of KVR.

i wish there were more reviews personally, although i'm totally guilty of not writing enough myself. i know it's the written comment part that scares me off.

for example, while the best overall synths in the free section look pretty good, the currently top rated GUI is Muon Tau. Land of Cockaigne's Oberon does look pretty cool (2nd), and third is Big Tick Ticky Clav. i'm not saying the above GUIs are particularly bad, i've just seen more stunning skins.

currently there are 1707 reviews, which sounds like a lot until you consider that there are currently 361 free synths alone, and 379 commercial synths listed here at KVR. It grows every day. Perhaps the reviewing method should be under scrutiny? (although I'm not going to offer any alternative method).

Post

Yes, I like the thread idea as well, and at least the free developers are getting some feedback, so at least Jack participated. The description of Tobybear's stuff was over-the-top, but to each his own. Just becuase it is posted in a thread doesn't make his opinion more important or threatening. To correct any ills, people should immediately give TobyBear and his stuff a review, or start a counter "Toby is king thread" :) That would be a positive response perhaps.

As to homo-erotic: I can only guess that "shocker" could be seen as referring to the wrestling move in a digit is shockingly placed, uh , somewhere in his opponent. I was not aware of this plug though, and it looks interesting!

the reason for my original response is this...

it's good to be critical, but it just didn't need to "go there" with the homo-erotic gui stuff. Sure put him on your overrated list, but it's not necessary to take it there with unnecessary jabs (especially when the individual shares nearly all of their work for free)

Now granted, Toby just brushed it off which is cool... and I'm not here to defend him... but when you lose a developer like the tbtaudio stuff because people can't seem to appreciate when people do something for free.. it really bugs me.

anyway... interesting stuff in the thread, and I would agree it's a good thread, that comment just bugged me so I felt the need to say something about it. And this isn't about create a Tobyfan thread. It's about people being constructive, even if their comments are negative.
