there's some truth in that.I used to do that with a $50 Creative card. Like I said, if you know your system's sound you can do it with anything.

Free and cheap here.
Layering, filters, and EQ help get that "paid for" sound.
Please don't forget Psycle.

The proof would be some references to "quality" artists, if anyone come across an article or "word-of-mouth" about any artist using free/cheap plugs, plz do share the info.BONES wrote:What more could you need? That is a seriously powerful set-up, especially when you think about how many banks are available around here for many of them. How stupid are we spending money?
My only reference is an (lost) article about OTT, he suppose to use alot of free stuff from the net, BUT he probably got some hardware analogue monster gadgets on the side to play with.

http://emusician.com/mag/emusic_sonic_surgeon/Do you have any particular soft instruments that are your favorites?
I have literally thousands of soft synthesizers. That's not an exaggeration. Just in Steinberg V-Stack on the PC — I detest PCs, but they're kind of a necessary evil — I have at least 1,200 Synth Edit synths, and I use all of them. And then the AU — I probably have 200 AU plug-ins, and 500 to 600 OS 9 ones. Some of my favorites — just to throw some out there, because I'm one to talk about anything I use — I love Big Tick Rhino for the PC. I love Istvan Kaldor's Rotopuker — it's amazing [see Fig. 3]. For OS 9 I love Native Instruments Absynth and Absynth 2. Synapse Scorpion is an amazing one; Synapse Junglist [now called Hydra] is amazing. The Emagic EXS24 [see Fig. 4] is my favorite sampler ever made. I love that thing so much. I like Atmosphere a lot; it's really useful. My main sound-design box is Kyma, the Capybara system [see Fig. 5].

True! Psycle is one cool thingy, goes great with EnergyXT BTW (sorry, but Psycle's own VST implementation still sucks, so EXT comes as sort of a wrapper with extra tools).androidlove wrote:

Good thing about Psycle is that it isn't a *real* tracker, ie even if you never useed IT2 or Renoise or whatever you'll get to grips with it in no time.

Why are you so intent on slagging off Reason? I thought this thread was a good one until I read this part. Sure there is plenty good free stuff out there (and some of what you listed *is* superbBONES wrote:Whilst slagging off Reason in another thread, it occurred to me that everyone says there is all this free stuff around but its all just out there, somewhere. Someone made a list of Reason stuff and found similar ridiculously priced NI stuff to make the point that Reaosn is cheap for what you get so I thought it would be a relevant exercise to make a list of free stuff that I could use to further slag off Reason. I only thought of Traktion 'cause one of the Reason idiots bought it up. Otherwise I'd have gone with eXT at $50 or so [great sampler too]. I think I might go back to the Reason thread and do it properly now.
Why is there this constant bee in your bonnet? Because you use Orion?
Quit it man and stick to the subject.

It's almost full circle to the early 80's music scene when you think about it. I mean in the 70's you had HUGE complex synths handled by the likes of Keith Emerson, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk and all.
Then by 1980 you have a group named Trio with a hit using a $100 Casio VL-tone, Greg Hawkes makes the Casio MT-30 a part of The Cars sound, even Eddie Van Halen does his awesome synth work on the cover Dancing In The Streets using an Electro Haromnix synth! So then Yamaha and Roland and Casio up it by making smaller and smaller synths. And technically, for say $1000, one could have a DX100, CS01, Boss Dr. Pad and some guitar pedals - and actually sound as good as Trio or Depeche Mode or Soft Cell. But then what do most of these bands do with their 'cheap success'... Go out and buy PPG's, Fairlight CMI's, and Synclaviers and DX5's et al.
So yeah, I could easily see that cycle happening again. Someone makes a catchy little hit using nothing but free synths on a lappy or a Palm Pilot - be the talk of the town - give us all hope and inspiration.... And when we see that bugger after his hit - he'll have 7 G5's, 8 P5's, 3 Receptors, and 2 Neko's loaded with Arturia and Neurons and all that.
The circle of synths.

Fine, if you want to be a pedantic dickhead you take into account the fact that if you didn't buy food to sustain yourself you would die and never get anything done. But if you already have a computer and you have something in the fridge to keep you going, you can do the rest for free. Is that clear enough for you, moron?Spe3D wrote:Hello! cheap is not free = my point
As to your red herring about "release quality", you know as well as I that it is not something that can be satisfactorily defined which is why I continually ignored it. By the same token, you knew exactly what I meant by it, making you a double dickhead for bringing it up.
