good question.. but I think they would have just expressed their present culture just as other composers from that time would have done (say vivaldi) after all, music is an projection of one's experience of culture..

so I guess a hundred years later other composers would have taken their place and make the same kind of music back en co did in their time

well... ligeti is still alive, and as far as I know, he doesn't work with computers at the time, although he did a few electronic music in 1957/58

a lot of people is talking here of bach et al. as if them wasn't human beings just like us.

c'mon, they were working guys, just like a lot of us. even bach was called an anachronic retrograd conservative and other awful things at his time, even by his own kids, so the upgrading of such personalities to genious status was done by all that romantic thinking at the XIX, that until today sicks our minds.

bach worked on the XVIII century. period.

what are WE doing with the tools we have today? what are our contemporary composers doing now?

Think of other fields.
Would Isaac Newton say of computers: " I would not use a computer because I want to work out the calculations in MY mind otherwise it is not ME that calculated it?" I think he would have seen the advantages right off. And the engineers that spent years learning how to use a slide rule did not they invent the computer with it?
In the case of Bach, of course it is not HE it is the music he created, not his own self, albeit related. And to regress from his own time, should he have had the attitude that to play the klavier was cheating? Should he have staid with spoons?

So lets all go back to using spoons and sticks only, cause then only the real musicians amongst us will shine thru?
