Anyway, geek rock. As GaryG said, Talking Heads is something that I would count as geek rock. Televison as well...
Oh, god no. You miss the point. Those are the bands the cool kids were into...arty New-York shit...you know, beloved of the editors of Rolling Stone...

See, the problem here is your school was too cool. All the cool kids 'round some of us were into Zepplin. Talking Heads was that new-wave arty crap that had no balllllzzzz!!!

Or so it seemed.
..what goes around comes around..

See what you mean, but that was the music I was listening to at school (along with the velvets, Husker Du, Pixies, PJ Harvey
Oh...my...god...

That's a list of the most cool-friendly bands ever!

Could anything be more self reverential, ironic and insider-hip?

That's like the official music of exclusivity!

A scenario, for your consideration:

"Ummm...hey, guys, wanna listen to some records?"

"Okay. What you got?"

"Styx...and some Journey..."

(Sneers and self-satisfied laughs from group)

"Oh my god! No, we can't hang out with you, I mean, haven't you heard of the Velvets? The Pixies? Come on, man, get with it. Rolling Stone says your records aren't cool! Why, in ten years time none of them will appear on the best 500 albums list, and all of them will eventually be excised from the history books in favor of the cool bands we like! (Maniacal laughter) Hahahahahaha!"

"oh...um...okay. I'm going to go listen to some Styx and eat a worm. Nice talking to you."

-S.
For some perspective... a story from my youth:

"Ummm...hey, guys, wanna listen to some records?"

"Okay. What you got?"

"Husker Du...and some Replacements..."

"Punk rock sucks, you little shit!!!!" (these last words garbled by the simultaneous pounding about the head.)

The Moral: The definition of "Cool" is subject to revision. :)

They have the #1 selling record of all time (Greatest Hits Vol.1) I guess maybe there are a few people who don't see it that way? :hihi:
just curious where that figure comes from, I'm not questioning it's truth, just curious.

I admit I love Styx Grand Illusion. When I hear Angry Young Man on the radio, I am still amazed.

you should see the scars on my arms and the prozac cosumption that I have had for the last 10 years :( (and I dont mean that in a "woe is me" type of thing)

Anyway the kids in my school were into trance and house of the commercial type as that is what they danced to when they went out

Very true  I now count those bands as a blast from my past (but still love them). I do kinda like trance and house nowadays, but Drum N Bass is my punk rock music now

The moral of the story is:

If the music of a band/singer gets you "right there", right in the heart and in the head, then it must be brilliant, and f**k anybody else's opinions.

(but that would be boring!! )
