Atmosphere is GOLDEN. Only two voices simultaneously, but the combinations are impressive.
Heavy on the ambient and pad side, but that is it's real strength. Need great pads? - look there.

If you have a Rewire capable host don't discount Reason. It comes with a fairly good library and there are tons of Refills available for numerous styles of music.

Beware of ProteusX - lots and lots of problems. It also is really slow to load anything and has a very annoying saving/loading system. It does have good sounds, though.
My vote would be for SampleTank 2XL. I don't know why people think it's bland, I think it's great for all manner of acoustic music
. The synths suck. They just plain suck. But other than that, most of the stuff besides the strings and brass are very useful in actual music-making.
I'd like to hear a demo of Sonic Synth 2 doing some acoustic stuff, though. Just out of interest
. If you want to hear some SampleTank 2XL, http://www.tjhsst.edu/~alederer/Music/R ... _Suite.mp3, not finished or anything but gives you a good sense of ST2XL's acoustic sounds (only reverb and some mastering applied, everything else is ST2).
