Portishead are actually named after the town where they grew up - Portishead (actually, I think it is now a suburb of Bristol, but you get the point).
wrt Aphex Twin, I read in an interview somewhere that the Twin bit comes from the fact that his older brother was still born (and was called Richard James, strangely enough) and that the Aphex bit just sounded cool. When his releases started getting attention, Aphex the company were a little uneasy about the name but they came to an agreement (hence the "Aphex used by permission of..." on his album covers).
Of course, Rich is known to lie like a pig in shit during interviews just because he can, so I take that with a whole cellar of salt

Two local bands that are the darlings of the hipster elite are P:ano and The Organ.
Anybody remember Bassic and 303 Infinity from the MP3.com days? The innovation and imagination displayed in their choice of names was just as apparent in their compositions.

don't forget Roland Dube (pronounced doobie)
actually that was my alter ego at one music store I worked at (for the computer, so it looked like a sale, at this store we couldn't buy used gear until it was around a while) he lived at 420 hemphill drive in Stoneham Mass (real town anyhow) the boss never caught on...
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.
