seriously though, it's not like it popped up somewhere out of the blue...all hail Chicago, MAW (even though they're NY) and all underground house producers worldwide!
Don't get me wrong though, Daft Punk are great - their last two albums are a bit arty farty wankery though - glad we got 12" remixes

i never "got" the backlash that greeted "Discovery". For me, it's "Homework"+
I think it was basically damned by house-snobs. It's a great album, except for the last track "Too Long". Which is, at least, a supremely appropriate title
Got "Human After All" - initial reaction, super-monotonous. I'll give it another few listens though.

Daft punk crew didn't invented "The french touch" alone
....if you want to be more precise the name "french touch" appears with St germain first album (from F communication) in the english press.
But the french filtered house (french touch) as we all know it know has been revealed to public through daftpunk 's homeworks. Then Cassius (Boombass & Zdar) released 1999 wich may be anthem in the french touch music lover's world.
Again I think people have formated daft punk's music too quickly....so they have o do some "accessible" music.
But if you wanna heard some music from them - that they don't sign with their names - listen to some french music, I know they did the sound one or two years ago for a hiphop crew called 113,kind of funky track, but I don' remeber the name.
All people who don't know daft's history can't easily understand why they produce music like this...but it's another discussion.

Yep, I *much* prefer Discovery to Homework... They kept the funky grooves and added melodic 80s nostalgia on steroidsclueless wrote:i never "got" the backlash that greeted "Discovery". For me, it's "Homework"+
Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

it always struck me that the real problem with that album was the house "snobberati" turning their noses up at pop songsgriels wrote:Absobloodylutelyclueless wrote:

And if 'Discovery' was in fact a mashup of The Buggles and Sylvester, I don't give a figgy, it's a damn catchy tune

The song was called "le 113 fout la merde", featuring Thomas Bangalter at the vocoder.Karen-K wrote:to ericj23 and flex42

Yeah to the guys who pointed that out: this record is so loud it hurts! Open up a track in your wave editor: waveform is like a wall : ) I really think this is a very garage rock record, the gain crank to 11 (even if it sounds harsher) very consistent (or boring if you want) sound throughout, seems live recorded in one take (yeah seems, i said seems : ) if you know what i mean. If it was the white stripes people would have loved them, unfortunately in electronic music this approach to raw record making is quite new. I thought it should appeal to the indierock turned electro type of crowds like the pitchfork guys, but even they're bashing it, i dunno what everybody was expecting. In my opinion you get the same usual daft numbers, like the rolling & scratching alike track, the vocoder number, all their trademarks, even though the production this time is quite shocking i must admit.
