That may sound like a joke but I buy guitars that call out too me...I know in a minute of playing it if I like it. All that matters is the action, I can customize any other things I want. I even once moved the volume control on a tele up to the strings like a strat...cosmetics, brand, who else plays it has no bearing on me. 
I bought my ESP, came home, warmed up the soldering the second day I had it and replaced one pick-up and rewired it funky. I put an EMG 81 in the bridge and kept the stock duncan in the neck. But an 81 is low impedance so I wired to volume pots instead of one volume one tone. For the 81 I used a 25k pot and for the duncan I used a 500k pot. Then I put the switch between the jack and the pots (now I can do that randy thing shutting off one pick-up, however I never will). It's a disease you know, I can't leave a guitar alone...
the one I moved a volume control on which meant drilling a big hoe with a hole saw. I put a kahler on it (more cuttibg), a semour duncan invader in the bridge (still more cutting), a 59 in the neck, I sanded the front and back with contours like a strat...I even put an audiocraft pre-amp in it. One guy said it was the worlds only 80 watt guitar...
