are you running the two soundcards in ONE program? i thought that was impossible. my computer now has an mbox and an audiophile what a mess i made.quincy wrote:cypher - i wasn't talking about plugins but then i'm not sure that comment aimed at me!! I was talking about standalone DJ software and stuff, cos i got 2 soundcards so i can use one for headphone monitoring and one for main output.

Its not impossible at all, it just depends what the software supports.Mr. Tunes wrote:are you running the two soundcards in ONE program? i thought that was impossible. my computer now has an mbox and an audiophile what a mess i made.quincy wrote:cypher - i wasn't talking about plugins but then i'm not sure that comment aimed at me!! In DSS DJ i can use multiple cards or multiple outs on one card, when i last demo'd traktor studio it can only use one card with multiple outs, which is bloody stupid given that even traktor DJ version can use multiple cards. Most worthwhile DJ software now supports multiple cards, and even some that don't can be hacked by using ASIO4ALL v2 to enable this to work, this may actually work with traktor studio but i haven't tried.
I'm only using crappy onboard sound for my monitoring channel and audiophile for main out, but it doesn't give me many problems as far as i can tell.

Same here, there is actually a driver called AsioX that was coded by some nice guy specificly for this purpose (AP 24/96 and AC'97), only minus is that the headphone out of the Realtek sounds worse than s**t. Maybe this would work with Traktor Studio?I'm only using crappy onboard sound for my monitoring channel and audiophile for main out, but it doesn't give me many problems as far as i can tell.

oh man that sounds dangerous to me but probably not dangerous enough to ruin your mix sessions. in the scheme of midi-note triggering i find onboard audio to be way behind but i guess record djing can put up with the added latency.quincy wrote: I'm only using crappy onboard sound for my monitoring channel and audiophile for main out, but it doesn't give me many problems as far as i can tell.

I'm only a hobbyist doing this at home for my own pleasure anyway, sono major problem if it crashes or anything. not that it ever does, only when i tried "djdecks" software did i manage to crash my PC by trying to scratch with it. Still, all those FX are nice to play with!Mr. Tunes wrote:oh man that sounds dangerous to me but probably not dangerous enough to ruin your mix sessions. in the scheme of midi-note triggering i find onboard audio to be way behind but i guess record djing can put up with the added latency.quincy wrote: I'm only using crappy onboard sound for my monitoring channel and audiophile for main out, but it doesn't give me many problems as far as i can tell.
Not sure what you mean about the midi-note triggering thing, but anyway in the future i hope i can afford to buy one of those behringer DJ controllers or something similar. Used to have an evolution x-session but the crossfader was far too "light" in operation and a bunch of 16 knobs isn't that much use really.

Just a little update for anyone who is interested.
I posted a message on the DSS DJ forums, and after 4 days still no response, not from the developers or other users.
I tried emailing the developers using the contact email on the website, and no reply after 2 days(nearly 3).
Little bit dissapointing really, from testing this seems like the best DJ software for the rpice on the market. Less than 50euro and has MIDI controller support and plenty of features but not too many so as to make it complex.
However, i'm not too sure about registering a piece of software if i'm gonna get crappy or non-existatn support. On the forum there is talk of a Pro version by the developers that is apparently due in may. However i'm sceptical, which is a great shame as if this program had more decks, better FX options etc then it would be a killer.
But a practically dead forum(a post or 2 every few days it seems) and no reply from the dev is not a good sign if you ask me. I hope the devs are just on holiday.
So i guess i keep looking or try djDecks again!!
Any more suggestions welcome. I am a great believer in random lucky finds with software, i have found great software before that seems little known or old but still great, so here's hoping.

Okay, I'm back.
My bandmate had stability issues with djDecks too, so it's out of the race. The stability issue is now a showstopper for us, as we just got our first djing gig at a club
DSS dj I just didn't like the interface and considering your experience with the forums - it's no go.
We almost decided to save up and buy Traktor DJ studio, but then we stumbled upon Virtual DJ 2, (by the same guys who did atomix). It's a lot more expensive than djDecks and DSS, but almost half the price of Traktor (100EUR).
It has everything I could want in a DJ software - MIDI control, multi-card support, samples, FX (VST support!!!), time stretching (very good).
It has amazing beat-matching feature and a briliant interface. Forums seems active. If it's stable and no special issues will arise, this one get our money - no doubt.

Thanks for the tips spacefox.
I looked into that before and it seems like a great program but the price puts me off a bit.
Also at 100Euro you can get Mixvibes Pro 5, you can have up to 16 decks, it has MIDI support and fantastic FX section, all the trimmings really. Also has selection of pitch modes so it can alter speed without pitch or do traditional vinyl style alteration with pitch control, as well as scratching and all that stuff. check it out at www.mixvibes.com
On the surface this looks to to be the single most powerful DJ software on the market, i just wish i could spare the money!! There are also loads of different version of it including a brand new 3 deck version at 89Euro.
by the way spacefox, when i tried virtual DJ a while back i had serious issues with the VST support, so bear that in mind.

Spacefox, i just had a thought, see what you think.
Regarding FX and other processing, i think it would be possible to use Virtual Audio Cable(VAC) to route the outputs from some DJ software to any VST host for processing and FX as well as just EQ and mixing.
VAC costs $50 if i remember correctly, so it adds to the price a little, but it would add pretty much unlimited mixing and FX power to the DJing setup.
Sadly the demo of VAC only allows 1 virtual cable (as opposed to many in registered) so tricky to test this setup of routing 2 turntables onto 2 virtual audio outs(soundcards) and into a VST host.
Anyway just a thought

Great idea, it's a shame you can't check it beforehand. Also, regarding VAC - it seems it is no longer developed, and I am reluctant to pay for any software program which is not actively developed anymore.
If I go the Virtual DJ route, I might achieve this by having a an instance of EnergyXT on each deck
This could be the ultimate DJing setup.

That EnergyXT idea is a great one, but given my past experience with the VST handling in VirtualDJ i wouldn't get my hopes up of that working.spacefox wrote:Great idea, it's a shame you can't check it beforehand. When i tried it seemed to have trouble handling VST fx, even simple ones. Shame really, otherwise it seems a great little DJ package.
I still think DSS DJ is a front runner, despite not seeming to have a very active forum its the most stable app i've tried (perhaps bar the traktor stuff from NI) and its very good for not much money.

I'm a little uncomfortable about this area of DJ software apps. Surely beat matching is what the DJ in there for and distingiushes DJs by their levels of skill in this area. When the software does this automatically it sort of takes away the challenge!?spacefox wrote:It has amazing beat-matching feature and a briliant interface.
Maybe it's just me?
