Most of the population of the Outer Banks live in the bit adjacent to the big green (wooded) bit above center right. That's where the towns of Kitty Hawk (where the Wright Stuff flew in 1903), Kill Devil Hills, and Nag's Head are.
The "dog's-leg" (bend) a little south of the center is the famous Cape Hatteras. About half of the town of Hatteras got obliterated by Hurricane Isabel in September 2003. :-( Between there and the three towns there's a lot of wildlife sanctuary, not many homes. Several Coast Guard life-saving boat stations from way back have been converted into homes or businesses.
(Back when I lived on the Outer Banks for real -- in a stretch that had no paved roads at all for 20 miles either way, and nearly no development -- there was an abandoned Coast Guard station about a third of a mile south of our place. Some people lived in it, and one tough old sailor [I kid you not, this is true!] lived in a tiny shed out back of the station.)
Littering the entire coast are centuries of shipwrecks, so many that this area is called the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." Told you it was a vacation paradise!

[edit] To clarify: This is well north of palm-tree territory. Nice shore, good fishing, no coconuts except those you buy in the supermarket. Pine trees, yes. Palms, no.

This is a classic kvr thread distortion/enhancement pattern, but it has never happened in one of my threads before.
I feel honored somehow.
But then, perhaps it's just that I don't get enough sleep.

Topic drift on KVR, as in most really interesting forums (or fora, have your pick, we made plenty of both), tends toward plate-tectonic magnitude but somewhat jackrabbitish speed and direction.
I can never tell where the reality/fiction line is either. Blame it on the 17th-century surveyors and cartographers who had to chop a fraction of a degree out of the map to make their numbers match up right, which is why you won't find Croatan on maps now.
Palms don't grow naturally on the Carolina Outer Banks, either the real ones nor my Croatan. :-) You'd have to go a ways south from here -- Florida certainly... maybe Georgia?

I lived on the opposite side of the atlantic for some time on the coast too, (west coast of Eire) with no electrino or hot hot waterino , we had to light a fire under the bath tub (outdoors of course!!!) before scrubbing commenced , yes we were hippidies, not as crass as the new ager type and not as loved up as the sixties/seventies type .Temperate climate hmmff! -5 in winter to about 18/20c in the summer.
Where I live now the hot water is stuck on all day and night ... can't turn the damn thing off ???!!!.And the clime here is sub tropical 28c to 40 in summer and about 5 to 28c in the winter.
Hmmm it's a been a funny old life so far for me
And these beats are reeeeally good , I was jamming some geeetar with them today and yeah they stood up pretty good. I've said this before... ok now I'll shut up ... I should be asleep
