Why do people feel the need to write standard music?

By that, I mean that I was clear, not that you're stupid of course

Well doesn't everyone think they are doing something special? The fact that some people think it sounds like that and others like something else is because the brain tends to look for similar things so it can decide what it is listening to in the first place.

When listening to the "music cafe" I often find a lot of original music. The problem is quite often this is either boring or just too experimental / avant garde.
Sometimes I think it's better to be more "standard" and just do a great tune instead of being original just for the sake of it.
just my £0.02

And also, regarding pop... have you ever tried playing Feel from Robbie Williams on the giutar?

personally, i don't think people 'need mirrors', or that we need to hear the same kind of music to be satisfied. we want to listen to something that is great and appeals to us. it may be that we want to hear something similar to a style we like, or that a part of us is waiting to be awakened by a killer new sound.
but there's nothing 'pathetic' or crazy about people making music in the same way. it's equally upsetting on the ears to hear some unlistenable dross that's different for the sake of being different. the best musics come when people just make what their insides tell them to make. leave in the errors, perhaps try a little bit of something else to spice it up, but go with what the gut feeling is. that may be some dnb tripe, or it may be the future of sound, but it's got to come from an artist, and someone will appreciate it. these things happen, and there's nothing to be afraid of.
at the end of the day, as long as there ARE people making 'the same old stuff' there are going to be people getting annoyed about it and wanting to revolt. so there's always going to be some kind of forward movement. let's just hope it's not 'for the sake of it' and overshadowing other things that are indeed 'better'

Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

A:
It gives me a satisfaction to know,I can make something like that.
B:
I never stop searching for the melodi, the riff, that sound, wich are a little bit more than the one I have been able of composing until now.

sorry i must have been sleep-typing again, when did i say i made original never been done before music?topaz wrote:at this point I must ask, can I hear some of your original never been done music please![]()
and what has that got to do with the argument anyhow?
in case you're too dense to realise it, there's a difference between making fresh music that doesn't sound like everything else, and totally 100% crazy experimental mind warping innovative music (which is obviously not what i am referring to with this thread)

i agree. 'being different' is usually not a motivation for making great music.haydxn wrote:

in my mind there needs to be a healthy balance

Don't people understand that to write outstanding music you need to do something different? Push the boundaries? Surprise people??

these both suck, but original music is the easiest to make.
the problem with it is, usually nobody else ever likes it,
and if you dont like these, well, it proves my point.

edit;
if anyone actually does like it or doesnt think its original,
then whoa, whatever. there are more files in the dir for now.
basically this thread was started out of "i suck and cant make anything worthwhile, why dont i just try to argue about philosophy instead of just making music"..
there used to be a guy called starsyn, he claimed nobody else
in the channel he was could make decent music, we all just
lay out loops and rythyms with different sounds and stuff
and "you CALL THAT MUSIC?".. anyway, this guy never finished
a single track in his life, he claimed things like "DIGITAL
SYNTHS SOUNDZ LIEK SHATTERED GLASS". "i asked this producer
of famous hits how he gets such FAT drum sounds", vs
"i hate how all commercial music sounds mixed the same way,
they call it phat but it aint all that"
ok, so i cant remember exact quotes, but you get the idea.
this guy made lots of hooks, and never any full track. also,
to be honest his hooks kind of sucked, i mean they were almost
there, but it was painful how much he tried to mimic commercially
produced tracks.
also, he talked about how he liked to watch children shower
in the park near his home and once in a while go and join
them in the fun. .. draw your own conclusions.
i'll tell you mine though, anyone who complains about such
thing is making excuses and is f**ked up in the head.
totally.

But, in case you're too dense to realise it - you DID come across like you make music better than anybody else, so I think topaz's point is valid.
You critique people for not being original (even though originality is apparently not necessary - make your mind up
I also would like to hear what music you make.
Just how different is it?
If it's not different and just more of the same old, same old, then your original point is invalid imo, and you're just somebody else spouting off hot-air and looking for a fight.

hmm ok let me clarify.Glassback wrote:Churchy wrote:This drives me fuckin insane!!

what i am trying to say is that making 'different' music just for the sake of being different is probably not going to turn out very well.
but at the same time, surely you should feel the need to be original instead of just aiming to sound like everything else
does that make sense?

Trouble is everyone wants to be famous nowadays. Music is a big part of people lives so most people want to be famous in music. Most people seem to think it's easy to write music, after all they see lots of talentless people on X Factor, Pop Idol etc doing it so that's the assumption they make.
So ok, writing music is fun and I would be the first to encourage people to have a go at.
But being talented is another thing all together.
I reckon if you took the fame bit out of music most people wouldn't pursue it.
There's also a theory that the more famous you become the more you repeat the same thing that made you famous in the first place.
When it becomes really un-cool to be famous we might start seeing less shit music about. Unfortunately we live in a celebrity driven world so I doubt that will ever happen. In the meantime if you're looking for good music it's probably best to look in the least obvious places - and when you've found it keep it to yourself

Being original is like travelling.
Not being original is like setting up camp.
If you like it where you are, you set up camp. If you don't like it (anymore), you travel.
