Nice analysis, especially the "CPU != the entire system" point.
I think Apple will simply replace one modified 64bits server CPU with another modified 64bits server CPU.

As opposed to turning Macs into complete Wintel machines.
Of course it isn't "simple" simple, but I suspect it isn't anything as drastic as some of the stuff I read on this thread (or the Wired article).

Give it a year from the change-over and China will be churning out cheap 'Macs' using the new chip. It's one way of making Macs more popular around the world.

just have a look @ the pearpc web, u'll know it is near impossible to get a top P-4 to run like a G4 (let alone g5), simply due to architectural difference. If Apple shifts to Intel, not only all apps will need to be recompiled and stuff, i think there's just simply no emulation at all for the older stuff.

With that said though, Apple could be asking Intel to make the PowerPC-compatible chips from then on, still not x86, but something else.

just a little thought from me, maybe totally wrong..maybe not.

I really don't think something like this could happen becuase I don'tr think they want to piss off their consumers and companies that make software for the Mac platform.
