I'm sure if someone devised the ultimate stripped-back Audio-only OS, within 30 seconds of release someone would be bitching about only being able to run one program at a time and someone else would whine about not being able to access the Internet on it - "Dammit, this thing cost me $50, it should move the earth!"

And someone else would be spreading daft advice on how to switch off the virtual memory while bragging about how they got the task manager to show 1k less memory on startup (or at least it did, before they uninstalled the task manager because it's just 'bloatware').

Here's a tip: if you want a tight Audio Production OS, buy an old Amiga and Octamed. It runs in HALF A MEG! On an 7Mhz CPU! Off a single floppy disk! Imagine that! It must therefore be BETTER THAN WINDOWS!

Yes.

//edit:
You might have to... upgrade your hardware to run this, though.

Windows XP is stable. I fix peoples computers for some extra cash, and every single person that brings in their PC and bitches about windows being unstable has the following issues:

1) their PC is unpatched
2) their pc is littered with spyware, trojans, pron, and other internet garbage
3) their desktop is their main file folder
4) There are littereally HUNDREDS of "free" or "trial versions" of software installed
5) they use IE
6) No virus protection

Yes, Microsoft should gear their PCs to be slightly safer on the internet, and the OS is not 100% bulletproof, BUUT

If you go out and surf the web on Seedy sites with questionable material you kinda get what you deserve. The internet is a ghetto, so there are places that you really shouldnt visit.

Another amen from me to what S_AP wrote.
My current net machine is running on a 6 year old install of 98 SE, it's stuffed with absolutely everything (I even kept the music apps installed as it's my old music PC) and I can't see a reason why I would change anything any day soon. Sure, with a fresh 98 install some things might run a bit faster, but I couldn't care less.
No virii, no nothing.

My music machines are running XP Pro or XP home, no funny tweaks or whatsoever applied (can't be arsed at all), just the usual things to make things a bit more responsive.
Only crashes I'm getting is when trying out some beta software. And that's about it.

I'm just annoyed as everybody about this blown up piece of shit people use to call operating system, but then, OSX isn't all that much better either, and that'd be the only alternative for a music machine - and after all, I can't complain, XP has been a huge step forward regarding stability.
I finished numerous night and day recording sessions without a hickup. Heck, a while ago I even recorded AND mixed a live act simultaneously through Logic. Again without the slightest problems.

Net security is indeed an issue, and obviously OSX users aren't as affected. But then, it doesn't make me wonder at all - would be a stupid hacker programming a virus or trojan for something only 2% of people are using.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

XPLite and it's brothers are way cool -- but for those less adventurous sorts, you might try using Wintasks Pro and configure it to kill all the unnecessary processes running in XP while bringing up your host and clearing out memory for it. Works great on XPSP2 here. I just configured a tab in Wintasks called "DAW" and it sets everything up, kills all the extraneous Windoze crap and Bob's yer uncle. ;)

and you can uninstall most of the unwanted software (like MSN, WMP, Outlook Express etc) using the original installation CD...

Kinda ironic it needs the .NET framework to run, though...

Fine if you want the speed, but the framework itself is just more unneeded bloat on a DAW.

It needs it only to create the CD, which you then use to install the stripped down OS (without .NET). Plus they link to an alternative runtime. In any case, it is just a runtime for applications written in .NET - it doesn't reside in memory unless it is in use, and therefore doesn't really bloat a system.

I definately recomend nlite - it does work damn well.

Ah I see. So does this mean it cant strip stuff out of an already-installed system?

Well, I mean bloat in terms of unneeded .dll's, registry entries that kinda thing, not just running processes.

I may just have a closer look. It might be useful for our 3D lab.

No - it is purely for creating install discs. It allows you to 'slipstream' SP2 onto your original disc so you don't have to install it, include drivers, remove certain bits your don't want/need, and various other install time bits and bobs.

Hope this helps.

doesnt use of .NET imply a .NET user (stupid frog icon) and therefore fast user switching service enabled?

kinda bloaty
