I have no idea whether or not hip hop is the "new rock and roll".
But I do know that I have been working with several local hip hoppers who are very interested in working with real live musicians, instead of the heretofore universal drum machine/sequencer setup.
As one guy said it: "EVERYONE sounds like that.".
I don't know what this might mean in the long run, but it seems an interesting developement.

And nothing new about that. It's actually the new trend in Alternative Hip Hop to use a live band...herodotus wrote:I have no idea whether or not hip hop is the "new rock and roll".

I know I would love to hear more of that, I want live, real instruments in these songs. Not just everything coming out of a MPC and a triton. Real violins, and ESPECIALLY reall bass guitar, real drums and all too. I think it is time for hip hop to shift directions. I've wanted to learn violin so badly myself. I find now that my style is at a crossroads, part of me is struggling to make something typical, but there is the part of me that by the end of me sitting down and making something, it has a jazzy type feel, a grimeyness, old school feel but I like to spice it up with distorted rhodes and lofi drums then top it off with some bass guitar and tweak a synth for a old school synth sound, to be totally original is something I strive for, even when I feel like doing a typical club type track or something. I really dig outkast and the roots' sound, but by that I don't mean I steal from or try to copy them or something. A much more sophisticated, complex classic and mellow type feel is much better in my opinion than your typical rap right now. One thing is for sure though, never will I use 808's. However, orchestral sounds have always hit it off for me.

But isn't it true that these 'groups' only use live musicians to replay already sampled loops of music that's already been recorded? That way they can circumvent paying royalties to the original musicians?Lady J wrote:And nothing new about that. If they're recording original songs to vinyl, and then sampling themselves (ala portishead), then that would be cool-but I have yet to see anyone use a live band for doing anything except ripping off the original artists.
