EDIT: As stated before, it's important to note that the rules aren't really "dance music", but rather more like "music that makes you want to dance." But if it's a Charleston that's really catchy and makes you want to boogie, cool! (hey, that's a pretty good idea!)

Certainly there is a skill to dancing itself, but of course anyone can dance. People say "I don't dance" just because it makes them look silly, but once you get over that, dancing is very fun. As musicians, I think it's important to be at least a little connected with dancing. I don't see how you can play in the groove if you hate dancing. Hope that makes sense, but it's just my opinion.

My wife suggested to me to do a Waltz or Minuet... the last one being the main danceable music type a few centuries ago... There are also the salsa/ samba/ rhumba/ merengue and all other latin musical styles... not to mention most folk music, all African ritual music... (I could even re-enter my may or june entries

Jamesb - "MooShoo" - very nice. To me, "music to dance to" is anything with a 'groove', and that can include slow, jazzy tunes like this with some interesting melodic / chord stuff happening.

I love a bit of groove. I'm not much for programming drums, but I'm looking forward to trying MooShoo with a 'real' drummer and bassist at rehearsal next week.

Amen to that! If all goes well, I'll be entering a Broadway tune from the swing era . . . maybe even with a little toe tapping in it.Markleford wrote:Swing was dance.

Rob, as we are at it, would you mind opening a separate sticky thread for the REVIEWS and the REVIEWS only? it is a good idea, proposed many times by many people.

A couple of thoughts about "music to dance to", esp. for the guitarists (?): a really sultry slooow bluesey thing would meet the criteria in my mind. Something to dance reaalllly slow to, reallly close. And of course spanish guitar stuff: some flamenco or Cuban music perhaps!
