What would make you switch to Linux?

I've never seriously considered Linux, but the few times I've looked into, I just seem to find nothing but videos of condescending computer dorks droning on and on about how Windows is the "worst.OS.ever" - and that's when I go back to my perfectly running PCs and Macs.

What you have to understand is that your vision of "perfectly working" is probably not the same as "serious" linux users. Now, let me be clear, there are a lot of people that use linux because it's dork-trendy or because of some ideological bullshit, I'm not talking about those folks. For getting work done, I'm a windows hater. For music, where the needs are much more limited, it's fine, as long as you don't try too hard manage it at a low level. I wouldn't advocate that someone who thinks that their windows system is "perfectly running" use linux, it isn't for you. If you run into its limitations, however, and become frustrated with certain things, and you could articulate those problems, I might suggest that you use linux.

Honestly, for most people, even if you do start to run into some of those problems, OS/X is the better choice anyway. For me, things like sshfs don't just install cleanly on OS/X systems, at least they didn't the last time that I checked, and forget trying to use tools like that on Windows (yes I know that there is a recent compile for windows). Tools like RStudio server are not currently available on Windows, and typically, these types of tools are always available first on Linux because Linux has momentum in the spaces where these tools are used.

So if Windows and OS/X work perfectly for you, you don't need linux. Don't take that to mean, however, that all people who use linux could use your windows installation for the things that they do, your perfectly working machine would be useless to me, and to you as well if you had to do the work that I do.

I have tried the latest Ubuntu build (14.04) for a couple of months on a old P4 with 1gig of ram. It runs better than the Windows Vista that ran on it, there is no virus, most of the softwares for it are free and for music making you have Ardour which is simply incredible. It also support a lot of hardware and you have total control of what you have on your computer. It looks beautiful too:





The only reason I'm not switching to Linux is because the audio plugins aren't really good. They are not bad, but their quality is far behind what is available on Windows. The costly workaround would be to use hardware effects, which is not a bad idea (you can still resell them, it gives you a more "unique" sound). But with this solution you miss the more complex effects you can only have as plugins (Reaktor stuff, Glitch, tempo based effects).

Furthermore, I produce sample libraries and I have to be able to offer REX2 and Acid Wavs. Unfortunately, I can't create those type of files on Linux.

But overall, I think Linux is the best OS, there's only OS X that beats it, and if I could afford a Mac I would use it, but since I'm poor Ubuntu would be my first choice if I wasn't producing music.

All OS have Malware - its a myth that Linux / OSX are immune. Its not a fail of Windows technically but more to do with popularity :

those who are saying "linux doesn't do X, Y and Z, and so I'm not interested" are missing the boat entirely. Linux exists because people PARTICIPATE. Not that you have to be a coder. You don't. But what makes linux so great is that it's grassroots. It's up to you and I, not the whims of a corporation.

So if you're happy with where you're at using Windows or Mac, I completely understand. It's comfortable. Linux however, exists because people get involved, even if your involvement is only making synth patches or writing a line on a forum to say, "hey, why doesn't app do X or Z?" or "I had this problem, what should I do to solve it?"

And there's no point in saying that linux has bugs in one place or another. Windows and Mac have their own problems too. The advantage is, YOU can be a useful part of the build. Or, you can just go along for the ride. But whereas if you're not happy with linux, you can change it. If you're not happy with a for-profit OS, most likely you can do little about it.

And since most of us here are computer users, I think we know how important that difference is.

The benefits you see are of no use to most people on KVR. As a computer user, I can tell you that the number one important thing for all here is compatibility with existing audio standards, from either Windows or OSX That's where Linux fails. If your community influence is so strong, get it changed. Being able to run Cubase and vstis/au will be a major. That will make a huge impact.

I haven't had a virus in the past 15 years running windows operating systems and I've had windows os in one flavor or another for 20. It's called don't be stupid.


Back in '01 I had this girlfriend who fervently believed everything on the net should be free. And she'd chase after every warez product on the market. Almost every sunday she'd call me over to fix her computer. And each time I did I'd give her the lecture. Finally it became too much and I broke it off with her. She'd still call me up wanting me to fix her computer or come over and use mine, after I broke it off. Take it to a tech, not my problem. I had to change my number so she wouldn't call me. She'd ruined another relationship that I was trying to develop and she wasn't on a booty call.

The thing is for all the talk of good audio plugin on linux none of them can beat paid software on Windows & Mac. Money drives quality, which is why Linux will never make it.

And if they started chasing money, they become the thing that they despise. They become another commercial OS.

the supermarket vs farmers market thing, speaks to the 'localvore' movement, moving back to buying food sourced as close to their homes, and sourced as close as possible from it's natural habitat. you get to know the farmers, so can choose to give money to farmers who take care to give theri animals the best lives, best nutrition etc, and that the food hasn't sat in a fridge for months before being shipped halfway across the world
