Enjoyed the raw doubled vocals. That snare could do taming a bit.Actually really enjoying this third time around.

Thanks. I actually deliberated over that snare for a long time. I wish I felt more confident that it was worth it. There's several components to the drum/percussion tracks. I played the main drums via MIDI triggers (keyboard and Octapad) then isolated the snare because I wanted it to be unique - I tried a couple different sounds before I settled on that particular snare (it's from an old Alesis Quadrasynth) - but the main drums were run through some subtle delay, reverb, monster compression and an envelope shaper with a synced LFO to quickly sweep the sound a bit. It's not soothing or natural sounding. The percussion overlay is a little disco beat I made layered with actual cicada noises - a loop from the opening sound.

The vocals were recorded clean but then I added tons of compression and a Pre-Amp plug-in to color and distort them. That back up vocal was... oh, I don't know what it's supposed to do. I think Tom Smothers once said, "Harmony is just melody sung off key." That's my philosophy.

I think I already told you how much I liked your song - so suffice it to say I like it better with each listen. Did I mention Roddy Frame yet? I really like the variety of Guitar sounds in there too. Very crafty. All I can do is peck out notes one finger at a time - thank God someone invented distortion and delay!

I know you are into anachronistic music so when I hear you songs I feel little like if I only knew a little more theory or history I would laughing a lot harder. Because frankly, I know you have a sense of humor about this stuff - and a very academic one at that. You probably get the jokes in Don Giovanni whereas I need to hear the "ba-dum-bum-(crash)" to know when to laugh. So what about this song? I don't know. It's in some weird mode isn't it? It might have a completely different effect if it used a real (or more realistic sounding) flute lead. As it stands, that synthetic quality gets in the way of the material for me. Devoid of a catchy riff or beat, the music is so subtle and unfamiliar it doesn't pique my crass attention. That doesn't mean I don't like it, it just... well you know, it just doesn't move me.

It's funny that you proclaimed your prejudice towards jazz because I would have thought it appealing to you. Your music often seems to have that stream-of-consciousness improvisation and interplay of instruments that I would say is a hallmark of modern jazz, fusion and its bastard child after a fling with classical: prog rock. Even this song isn't content to be a filter sweep and a drone. There's all that guitar noodling and tympani rolls. You could be announcing the arrival of Sun Ra. My neighbor loaned me Just Stompin' by La Monte Young which is kind of a electric blues-jazz-jam freak out which you might like. ...Or hate! All I know is life too short and my tastes mutate too much for me to make any general statement about any art form - or anything for that matter. Your entry is one of the tightest I've heard from you but it needs to punch through the buildup a lot quicker, plant its flag on the ground and start kicking ass!

BTW: Have you heard the new album by Particle? This song is probably what they sound like tuning up.

Thanks for that great indepth review and discussion. I don't know Particle or Monte Young, but it sounds like I will have to go check them out. You make it sound like I actually knew what I was doing, where I admit I do not really know . My theory background is lacking a bit, but if it sounds good it is good. (but is it art? )

is ironic since a computer generated track is strickly speaking not Jazz as there is no interplay between living musicians.

But I think it's is a shame that you dismiss an entire body of music though.

Can you tell me why you hate Jazz? If it is the extended harmonys, I might see why. This aspect may be an acquired taste. I

would be surprised, though if it were the rhythymic elements - since most modern music including uses much of the drum

styles developed in Jazz from way back to beginning. Jazz is huge and there may be some of it you'd enjoy. I can't recall

where you preferences lie but I might be able to refer you to some "Jazz" that would surprise you. Then I would have

fulfilled part of my duty as a "Musiciam"

this sentence is a bit provocative but I do not like in jazz:
- over-complicated chords (even with no root note )
- the science intellectual choice of mode/scale for soloing on a chord
- the bad habbit for many to play out of tune (or in a tune known by ...them?)
_ the feeling for jazz musicians that blues/rock musicians are ignoramus, do not play well...(I had experiences )

I was in a music school for months I even played some diana krall(deed I do) and some david sanchez
but preferred to play megadeth and lucky peterson

I'm a great fan of jazz. Jazz covers so many different area's of music,... Toe tapping old Brass band music, the very cool Mile davis "So what" style, the soulfull Fever (wasn't it peggy somebody), Gershwin and his classical (Rhapsody in Blue) and musical (Summertime) jazz, the experimental crossover jazz (Mile Davis, Bitches brew), Acid Jazz (James Taylor Quartet, Jamariqoe(?)), Drum And Bass Jazz (4 Hero, Ronny Jordon, the guy whose on the TV a lot who's name escapes me at the moment), Hip Hop (Jazzmatazz (I think it was DJ Guru?)), etc etc... that I find it hard to believe when people say that don't like any jazz! it's...

Thank you so much for listening to my song. I do not make gangsta rap at all, actually. I usually only make hip hop songs that have a positive message. It was really pure coincidence that I used Tupac in this case. It just fit right in. I wasn't really concerned about the lyrics, but just the flow. It really was just to give an idea of how it can sound with someone rapping to it. Thanks again for your feedback.

Just because "I find it hard to believe" doesn't mean it's true.
