Same here. It will still be subjective, of course, but the theme is going to play quite a big role in my votes.pheeleep wrote:Comments- Part 1.

Took a few days off reviewing to do my own entry. Now back to the coalface...
j_T/Fonk'n'stein - Fun. Good arrangement, but the performance perhaps needs a little more attention to really lift off. The programmed parts are slightly too stiff to kick into real funk territory. Overquantised? The timing on the brass could be a bit tighter (e.g. around 1:06) and the bass would benefit from being more central and emphatic, I think. Maybe a bit of panning would stop the kick drum stepping on the bass guitar. Or maybe just a trimmer kick sample. At the moment they're fighting for space. The vocals are a bit fuzzy and clouded, couldn't make them all out. Sorry, my comments are sounding overcritical, but the basic bones of the song are strong, and there's nothing here that can't be fixed up pretty easily. Just needs a bit of tying together and tightening up, no worries. As I said, good solid arrangement.
Beardedone/Spinner Fall - That main synth does have certain hovering insect sound, and the melody line flits about like a mayfly. As knockman says, the power of suggestion. The sober piano chords underpin things nicely in the great first half, anchoring down the slightly attention-deficit lead. The sixteenth percussion doesn't sit as well with me in the latter half, and it loses a bit of that meditative quality. But I'm glad you found a way into a theme that didn't appeal to you. As with astanine, it might be interesting to see you step outside your comfort zone from time to time. But you obviously love what you're doing, and that's a good thing regardless.
Jaidy/Zisorzat - I think you're relying a bit too much on delay in this song. You tend to swamp parts in so much delay that they lose their rhythmic impetus and start to sound indistinct and mushy. The percussion is a bit shy and hesitant for a dance song, and the drum fills don't feel particularly natural. But there are lots of signs here of something more interesting waiting to be explored. The fluttery airy synths at the start, for example, feel like they're from another song, and though they don't really tie into the beat here, they open up a whole range of possibilities, as does the synth break at 0:40.
herodotus/Frogs Don't Dance - There's a hell of a lot I like about this, so I'm going to take the easier, lazier route and nitpick the few small niggles. The cutout at 0:51 lets a bit of the suspense slip away, and feels like a golden opportunity to get some deeper bass element or low percussion creeping in, to avoid regression. The high frequencies on the bell sound become fairly wearing over the course of the song, but nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of eq, or by occasionally switching that motif to another instrument to give the ears a rest. And I found the end frustrating, cutting out just as an interesting new space was being explored. Bah. Tease. But I really like this - dramatic and sombre. Wonderful palette of sounds, especially the vocal-sounding background pads. Good luck with the ballet. Sounds like it'll be mighty interesting.

First page of reviews.
Not a good week for trance peeps I'm afraid. I'm just not in the mood. But the quality of the better tunes out there is really outstanding this month. Long live Funk. I should have my tune finished by tomorrow maybe.
If any wants/does not want their tunes streamed on my shoutcast radio would you PM me.
Aedia Cin: Very Vangelis. The sounds are well chosen for this piece as a whole, but individually they are all to familiar. The mixing is top notch. But no real hook for me.
Aldred: Brilliant Great strings great sounds Very short but confidently so. Top effort.
Andreas E: Lunacy. Very funny great mixing and arrangment and a spot on choice of sounds, that complement with each other. I love the false ending I have one like that for this month too.
Andy: Cool vibe. The waves are a bit cheesy. In fact the whole tune is very cheesy. Good choice of melodies and such but a few new sound techniques woul'nt go astray.
Armadillo: Good Vocals. Well mixed but it's tarnce.
Astanine 80's tarnce Thats a heavy bass nicely mixed with a cheesy nod to Popcorn.
*Beardedone: I'd like to hear Youtm do a mashup of my Dances round the maypole with your Dances of the mayflies spinner. Worlds apart but the same theme I think. I was confused until the drums kicked in coz the lead sound seemed so dominant over the piano. But it makes more sense once you know the drums are coming ( ie on second listen). The sounds converse with each other really well and always demand really close attention. I like the almost throaty quality of the opening sound(some kind of formant filter?), but it is your drum programming that intruques me at the moment.
Bit crusher: Nice easy going easy on the ears. Well mixed, well structured ,but nothing to make it memorable.
*Damstraversaz: The intro totally me fooled me I thought ah two minutes of therimin tweaking then the voice came in and I though ah well it least it will have voice tweakings as well then BAM! Big balsy bass and some strange Gabriel Yared type stuff. Top Notch. Shortlisted
Farlukar: Excellent Track: Excellent bass sounds and programming. The lead sound/melody a tiny bit too poppy on occasions especially 0:39-0:46
Freeztar Full on!! A bit chaotic but great fun too listen to and Dance to I'm sure. Very Very phat mix, totally engaging.
*GregJazz: I'm stunned. Shocked. Speechless!!!!!!!!!I can't get over this. This belongs to an era that went from being the most influental to me to the shit that has forced me to become a hermet. SOUL. Think The FatBack Band, George Clinton, Otis Redding, Bill Withers and Michael Jackson before the days of Beyonce, Lady J and Michael Jackson. You sit proudly with the former. Truly stunning effort.
Herodotus: I like the bass build up, not sure about the bells, I prefer when they sit back in the mix. Pad is cool Drums are great. Very long buildup piece with only two minutes is bound to anticlimax.
Hovmod: Last Farewell Tango: Emotional piano. Really well played the rest of the instruments surround it well focusing all of the attention to where it should be - the piano.
*IXOX: Briliant. Smooth. You've got shitloads of class. Shortlisted
Kaos: Standard Trancey effort. A bit like a entry from two months ago but without vocoded vocals. This is missing hook (or some kind or some vocoded vocals)
Knockman: I think maybe my ears are starting to gain a bit more sophistication. I love brass. I use them a lot I program a lot of it in or play it on the midi controller and then edit which I usually end up discarding in favour of sample loops. Some of the time it resembles the brass lines you have used here. I can't exactly put my finger on it but they sound good but programmed. The vocals are great as usual, their rhythm goes well with the drums.
Kovacs: Vocals are cool but needs to be lowered. Lyrics are cool too. Woud like to hear this tune (longer and properly mixed)
Katanan: Cool modern take on funky. Great drums. Love the wah wah. Just missing some funky vocals.
Khepira: Are these vocals from the same sourse as your previous entry? Funky track. I little bit chaotic but nonetheless a really fine tune.
*Liqih: F**king Brilliant. As I said earlier I love brass and I love what you did with those rimshots/hats or whatever. Is that really you playing the typewriter? Stunning. Great bass too man!
Mchlwisn: There are some really good sounds going on in this mix and it's well structured. I like the bass drum way back in the mix. but the lead is too straightforward.
Mully: Very indie with a heavy 80's feel. well produced, very short but the basis of a tune is there.
Patrick9: Very LOUD! Love the crowd samples. And I like its power. Don't like the bright Electric Piano-xylophone sounds. I think the sounds could have bounced off each other rather than all fighting for attention. Very loud. But thats like a real conversation isn't it - several monolgues going at once.
Pheeleep: Simple but haunting bass. Minimal drums. Great sounds. Top production. The opening vocal is good and of course I like its sentiment. The keys are simple but effective. I don't like too much speaking in tunes, so I didn't like the "make music for love....." lines but I really like the quite french speak in the background.
Repirator: The bass clicks probably deliberate but it always happens to me and it isn't deliberate.
*Richiebee Funky! Excellent but the sax is a little too loud. shortlisted
Rockstar not: I love the Clav. Tasty. It's totally cool. Great bass. BUt the lead brassy synth, while it holds the tune well enough, nonetheless robs it of it's authentic 70's funk as rebellion vibe.
RSMUS A tarnce meets eighties track. I like the pad at 1:21 But the rest of the sounds are very standard. But mixed well enough
Scuzzphut: Screaming tarnce! No doubt this would go down well at a club. Just not my style. Well mixed tho.
*Shuzen Great track Jazzy Elcectic beats, smooth bass. The leads syth changes tone enough to give a variation to a well worn sound. Me likes.
Ja X: Good use of echo ( I take it you use it a lot) very convincing Dub effort. The synth vocals are top(minimal) and work the tune. But the brass stands out as not being slick, laid back, dub standard.
Jaidy: Mixed well enough, I 'm sure you have accomplished what you set out to do. But as to anybody doing this music. To somebody who is not into it all sounds the same. This is not the case with ALL genres. THere are plenty of tunes that I wouldn't subcribe to but still see the merit. It's rare that Trance techno has this and it deserves it's ill rep.
Jamesb: Great! Smooth bass, nice keys. Very chilled. I like a lot. MAybe a bit too low in the volume dept.
*Scarabeus: Funky. tight bass, Great guitar, convincing brass. Confident minimal Vocals
Tristeza Orange: Snare seems too dominant for most part but the way they bounce of the tuba is great. Totally mad arrangement. Very toe tapping, not sure about dancing. At least not unless your a professional otherwise you could do some serious damage. A really enjoyable tune to listen to.
Ugo: This is really good. Surprisingly. But I assume its not sctrictly tarnce. Good opening drums. The drums really drive forward. I really like that. The synth sound is a bit too familiar (no biggie). Crashes are spot on, rising arp (always works). Plenty of climaxes. Good work.
*You": Now this is pure madchester type stuff. Top production Great Vocals. Great arrangement. As always I'm in awe at your multi-talents. I never really have any constructive criticisms. Till now. But I didn't think the rap was of the same standard as everything else. It wasn't bad or anything. But since I have such high expectations from everything you do do I thought I'd point it out. I hope this doesn't get me flamed but I don't like white rap. I've tried wording this other ways and I can't. But when Wopelka raps it has a very distinct french authentic sound. And I've heard really good Thai rap (I think it was thai), and of course many white people can emulate the black sound convincingly. But white rap sounds wrong to me. However the lyrics themselves are cool. Do you gig? If you ever come to Ireland. You'd be able to spot me immediatley I'd be the lunatic in the middle of the dancefloor.
Vurt: Ouch That hurt. Reminds my of Eraserhead. I'd like to hear this at a mainstream club inbetween Beyonce and Westlife, and then be the only one on the floor dancing as if it were an Elton John and George Micheal duet. Kinda shuffling my feet like grandad at a wedding reception. Oblivious to the mass-hari kiri taking place arounnd me, as all the young people in their white and pink jumpsuits and imported bottled beers ,are suddenly and rudely shown that there is a bigger world out there and just can't handle it. Dance or Die! I luv it.
Wilkortye: Slowdance. Oh my God. It sounds exactly like what I would have heard at the local disco 20 years ago bottling out of asking some girl I fancied to dance. This brings back terrible memories. Well executed, but why Oh why would you do this to me.
Wopelka: I would have expected this more in the Spring competiton. Very ecocative of woodlands and the little people. Cool Instrumentation. Great strings in the background.

A word of warning:
The Kick: Very simple mistake, too much bass. Did the final mix on cans late Sunday night at a fairly low listening level. Got scared myself when I heard it on speakers for the first time. Those of you who use a subwoofer, be careful

Thanks for the comments Techbot. I know what you mean about caucasian rap. I don't have anything against it if it's done right. I don't really think I'm much of a rapper. My delivery owes more to Arlo Guthrie or Bob Dylan than Grandmaster Flash or Chuck D. Sometimes I just tend to cram a lot into each line of verse. But I'm glad you liked the tune, it touch-and-go for awhile. The original version I completed a week ago was a lot more guitary. I just thought it need a bit more bounce.
I don't do this professionally so I'm afraid I won't be touring anytime soon. It would get in the way of my domesticated bliss. I like the idea of a the mashup though. I would just hope you or Gordon wouldn't get too bent out-of-shape if it doesn't come out like you expect.

I really hope you all get to see the real thing one of these days. In the right light watching a group mayfly imagos with their sparkling wings is enough to make even the most disciplined flyfisher stop casting.

Thanks for the reviews
. It's that short because I spent two days avoiding work to do it, and if I hadn't pulled up when I did there would have been repercussions of the knacker-kick sort from my wife
. It's really interesting to know how people hear my music. This is the first time ever I've shared anything with anyone. The first time in ages I've done anything near completion too.
Many many many many people have been asking, so Mark why do you deserve to win this month and what will you do if you do win? Well, I was deputy head boy at school and played on the rubgy, tennis and basketball teams. I ran middle distance as well. And did a bit of acting, just a bit mind. If I am crowned king of July contest I will use my crown and plugins to fight world poverty. I love my mother.
Can anyone beat that?
I think not.
