i've been getting these really weird messages through the "feedback.cgi" form on xhip.cjb.net
Date: 2347-250107
From: Paska Olka
Subject: olka@pathetic.com
::

Love is all around, lets all around the world to play
i asked the owner of pathetic.com, he said these bots have been around recently - probably from some recent windows trojans. he suggested that i use a javascript submit rather than the usual "submit" <input> button.

they apparently portscan looking for smtp servers, then use the domain names with randomized names and addresses. actually i just noticed this bot put a full name in "from" and an address in "subject". i should create a cgi with a lot of text input fields and log this stuff just to see what weird crap bots post in there.

anyway i just thought this was funny. i've gotten about five simmilar like this in the last weeks. the bot apears to be obsessed with saying weird things about "love".

this is really weird though, check it out.

the form on this page got hit by the same bot

@aciddose:

xhip sounds great, very well done! Just two tiny things come into my mind: 1. Would it be possible to give the 24db Lowpass Filter a similar harmonic behaviour in conjunction with the saw/ramp as it is done in the mdaJX10 filter? When tweaking the frequency slider slowly up or down at full resonance the different harmonics of the saw can be heard very clearly, which is almost exactly like on the Roland SH-101 (my most beloved synth). Maybe it could also be implemented as a different filter option for backward compatibility? Maybe you would like to give the mdajx10 a listen, it's a free little synth with great sound. 2. xhip doesn't seem to respond to the hold pedal (ctrl 64 or so). A bug or is it me?

increase the level of the saturation control. the synth you're refering to has a fixed saturation which is roughly equal to 25% in xhip.

"2. xhip doesn't seem to respond to the hold pedal (ctrl 64 or so). A bug or is it me?"

it is on the todo list at http://xhip.cjb.net/xhip/todo.cgi

that was never the issue. What I posted was a draft, that wasn't even my design, but a simple demonstration that had to do with the question asked.

Then jon comes along and starts flaming with accusations of lack of taste etc.

I really don't care what your preferences are, but next time I have a design related question, will you keep the opinions to your self and stick to the topic (that applies to jon more than you). I might want to design a GUI for xhip as well, if for nothing else but for my personal use.

[back to the goddamn topic now]

Post

Sorry for the flaming tone, Kingston, but why wouldn't we others be allowed to express our opinions, just like you did?

gsoto is doing excellent work, and your suggestions would ruin it completely.

you still don't get it, do you? I simply used the design as a template in conjunction with the question asked. The question was never about using it on gsotos design, although it seems to work well. Too bad you fail to comprehend such a simple concept of thinking.
no need to argue back and forth about shadows, textures, color schemes, fonts, wood panels, or anything like that. all that stuff is user configurable
and the question was answered there. All I needed to know was whether it's possible or not, instead of your precious preference.

Post

No, that was not what you asked. Read your original post below.
Kingston wrote:aciddose and gsoto,

what are your stances on bump maps or detail textures? looking at gsoto's design a very simple metal/textile/sand bump map (something very unobtrusive) would make it even more aesthetic. Would it be a trivial thing to add?

say, bump map 1 to the module boxes (maybe a subtle drop shadow as well?), and bump map 2 on the background?

here's a quick knock up:

the module bumpmap is *very* subtle in this, but it adds up to a smoother overall result.

oh man I wanna start using that now! :hyper:

directed to aciddose as well. and besides, both of them answered the question already in detail. You're simply being protective about you highly precious minimalistic preference, with nothing to add. It's been very clear since the original thread.

Post

No, sorry. You are just trying to twist what you said, which in fact was nothing more than your precious preference.

You could have just said: "I'm going to design a GUI for xhip as well, are bump maps and shadows possible" but you didn't. Why? Because you wanted bump maps and shadows on gsoto's GUI so it would look "more aesthetic" in your opinion.

Post

[edit - removed stupid thread pollution]

we've had enough of this already, I'm pretty sure. on to more important things.

I just want to be free of those tabbed pages...

 @ Overdose... you people should know better next time!

Yes Kingston, you're right, stupid way to waste time.

Post

You know I never thought aesthetics were all that important to synth folks anyway. Case in point...

http://xhip.cjb.net/xhip/releases/v0/b6 ... .11.10.dll

- fixed issue with filter saturation and high resonance resulting in noise bursts
- added very basic waveshaper symetry implementation. the basic waveshaper function will need to be changed in
the future
- fixed a couple minor issues with some gui controls not being correctly initalized
