If VST3 is adopted then we had better buy Cubase.
Crazy?
Consider this: When VST's first appeared there wasn't as much competition. It's not the same today.
The whole VST community is dependant on the fortunes of one company, Steinburg. So to make sure they dont go out of business we should buy their products.
Or...
If the developers adopted LV2 then Steinburg could play their power games until the cow's come home.
Still think Im crazy?
If VST's is a standard why doesn't it work 100 percent of time?
The developers (both host and plug-in) need to have some self confidence and support LV2. If they dont then they and everyone else is dependant on 1 company.

Maybe AudioEase's PT base is bigger than VST or AU, but that hardly accounts for everyone... in fact you'll have a hard time finding any other company that supports VST, AU and RTAS for whom RTAS is not a niche market...djex wrote:Laughable just because not enough PT users buy your plugins? Our PT customer base is far bigger than the VST one--would you care to explain the joke in that to me?Urs wrote:As far as the representative from Audioease goes, saying that the market for Pro Tools is bigger than the one for VST was just laughable.
Believe me, nothing against AudioEase, but it was really strange, if not surreal.

because its merely a 'de facto' standard, and inadequately specified.lowkey wrote: If VST's is a standard why doesn't it work 100 percent of time?
No, they dont need to support LV2. They do, however, need to free themselves from a standard determined by one company for its own self-interest, that's true. Something other than LV2 would suffice just as well. The developers (both host and plug-in) need to have some self confidence and support LV2. I wasn't there so I can't comment on that. What I do know is that where I come from it is considered bad form to be publicly bad mouthing others without provocation.Urs wrote:Maybe AudioEase's PT base is bigger than VST or AU, but that hardly accounts for everyone... in fact you'll have a hard time finding any other company that supports VST, AU and RTAS for whom RTAS is not a niche market...

A plug-in spec from Linux land. It's been around a while now, but I think Linux native VSTs sort of knocked the wind out of them, as well as DSSI and what ever else was in the works.Urs wrote:What is LV2?lowkey wrote:LV2
I.e there is already more Linux native VSTi:s than there are synths in all the other specs combined. EnergyXT2 is probably to thank for this.
It might be worth looking into though, depending on the licenses.

Well, then I'm sorry. I feel provoked. The whole showcase was a slap in the face of every developer who attended. And the two companies mentioned took part in this. I think I have all rights to feel provoked and I could find way harsher words for what went on. I indeed feel that I've been pretty held back so far. Sorry if it did not come across like this.djex wrote:I wasn't there so I can't comment on that. Im not a developer but I do understand the benefits of plug-ins that dont break the host if the developer wants to innovate. At the end of the day it's up to the developers. I really hope they dont play Steinburg's game when there are alternatives.whyterabbyt wrote:No, they dont need to support LV2. No, I am not on Steiny's payroll, and I can't speak on behalf of Steinberg.Tallisman wrote:you mean this fredo: [] are you certain he is on the steiny payroll?
I do moderate the Nuendo.com forum and I am allowed to ask any question to any developer.
Which I regulary do.
Yes, that was me.JonHodgson wrote:Wasn't it Fredo who also told you that all developers had invited to join the Beta program a year ago?
That is what I have been told by our head developers.
To be more correct (My mistake), it should have been: most *major* plugin developers have been invited.
--Don't take this the wrong way, I don't mean anything with it. --
I also know that of all 3th parties who were invited, only few have accepted the invitation.
Yvan told me that the number of reactions was dissapointing, probably due to the overload of work they were facing with MacIntel & Vista.
I have no reason to doubt Yvan's words.
Since I have said this in public, I have been contacted by half a dozen 3th party developers to ask how they could join the betatesting.
AudioEase was one of them and the proof that I am not making this up.
Many 3th parties *have* been invited to join the testing and it makes sense to me that not *everybody* is invited. I can only guess on what grounds Steinberg has invited (or not invited) 3th parties.
Best regards
Fredo

Hehehe, and who would that be? The ones with the most products, the ones with the most people on the payroll, the ones with the highest annual revenues, the ones with the most users, the ones with the highest company value or the ones with the longest history?Fredo Gevaert wrote:most *major* plugin developers
