KBSoundSmith wrote:When you enter in an equation, the written form isn't what someone would intuitively expect. For example, if I want to write in two times X times pi, or whatever, I would expect to be able to write

2Xpi

However, I have to write

2 * X * pi

for it to understand. Just a little funky, so if it can support the more natural way to write it, that would be pretty cool. Also, the "generate" button didn't work when pressed; you have to press "enter" for the equation to be processed
The reason you have to write it in such a manner is because it supports * / + - operators. For example, toss this formula into the field and press enter:

tanh(x * pi / 6) + sin(x * 6) * sin(pi * x)

You should get something that looks like an off-center sine wave :)

EDIT: documentation should also be up shortly to explain what is and is not supported.

Good catch Ingo, I should probably have an option for what bit depth it exports as. Should 16, 24 and 32-bit be sufficient, or is there any that require a lower/higher bit depth?
Hi,

i guess that 16, 24 and 32-bit should be sufficient. :)

Ok, sounds good Ingo, I'll add it to the list for an update :)

I've just updated the e-mail list and also added all Wave Designer downloads to Developer's license holders, and everyone should have an e-mail in their inbox now :) If it doesn't get through in the next few minutes, please let me know so I can make sure you're included in the e-mail list.

Here are a few different forumlas that can create some interesting wave shapes:

 cos(x * 2 * pi)
 cos(x * 3 * pi)
 sin(x * 4 * pi) + tanh(x)
 tan(x * 0.45 * pi) + tanh(x * 1.5 * pi) * sin(x) * 8

I'll add some new ones periodically for those who want to test them out :)

Someone may have suggested here about Cakewalk's Z3TA+ 2 for waveform support, but it's not on the list at TeamDNR.net. I would like to see it added as an option.

According to the Z3TA+ 2 user guide:

Z3TA+ supports 16, 24 and 32 bit uncompressed stereo or mono WAVE (.wav) files as the user oscillator waveforms. Note: The .wav file can not be bigger than 65536 samples.

Looks like a very useful tool for granular artists as well as sound designers. Nice :tu:

It should work right out of the box then, as Wave Designer supports custom cycle lengths and is in 32-bit format :) Is it in actual .wav format, or does it require a separate extension?

Z3TA+3 waveforms are in the .WAV format, no other extension required.

with certain value for the Tangent ("tan") you could get a series of "peaks" or sharp pulses. Example:

 tan (x * 1,8 * pi)
 tan (x * 1,4 * pi) + tan (x * 1,1 * pi) + tan(x * 0,65 * pi) + tan(x * 0,55 * pi)

I used the "Normalize" feature for this.

You could also get interesting results when adding the SQR function:

 sqr (tan (x * 0,65 * pi)) (again use "Normalize" please)

This seems to be interesting for the Resynthesis feature of e.g. ElectraX (especially when morphing with the PW knob).

With other values for the Tangent you could get waveforms similar to a Sawtooth:

 tan (x * 0,2 * pi)
 tan (x * 0,3 * pi)
 tan (x * 0,4 * pi)
 tanh (x * 0,2 * pi)
 tanh (x * 0,4 * pi)
 tanh (x * 0,6 * pi)
reverse saw:  tan (x * -0,2 * pi) or  tanh (x*-0,2*pi)

You maybe have to apply both the "Normalize" and "DC Offset" feature for this.

BTW Wave Designer does not seem to accept decimal points (".") but only comma symbols (",").

I also got more interesting examples but those will be part of a soundbank for ElectraX i started working on. :)
I also plan releasing a collection of waveforms (also based on Cableguys Curve) at some point but not too soon. Anyway some will be maybe included in upcoming soundbanks (for e.g. ElectraX and Synthmaster 2.5) and a few are included with my soundbank for PPG Wave 3.V (see my signature).
ElectraX stores the waveforms in the preset file so no WAV files will be included there. Anyway maybe the WAV files will be included as additional files.

Hey Ingo, nice waveforms! We'll have preset library functionality in there very soon :) One quick note though:
Ingonator wrote:BTW Wave Designer does not seem to accept decimal points (".") but only comma symbols (",").
Odd, it should ONLY support decimal points. Loading the formulas into Wave Designer that you posted, the commas are actually not doing anything at all. Take this for example - leave all "waveform options" off and copy this formula into the entry field:

 tan (x * 11.6 * pi)

and then change the multiplied value in the middle to 11.65, and you'll see the waveform shift half a cycle to the left. Now just remember that the operated value absolutely needs to have a left-hand number. Meaning that if you alter the formula to this:

 tan (x * .6 * pi)

it will not actually produce any change to the currently shown waveform shape. But now, if you change it to this:

 tan (x * 0.6 * pi)

you'll see a waveform with only 0.6 waves instead of 11.6 separate movements. I am working on all the documentation still, but it's a process somewhat, as I'm trying to write it so that it's easy for even the people who do not really know trig at all.

Hey cool, hope it helps give you some new sounds to show off! Thanks for sharing your findings :)

I'll actually have some more news shortly, just testing something really quickly here..

Ok, there is now a new version available, which is 0.3.3 :) A list of changes:

Changelog (0.3.3)
- Added all formula functions except RAND and LIN.
- UI images now loaded from a "Skin" directory in the data folder.
- Reduced the filter resonance so it doesn't badly self-oscillate.

I'm working on a website for a client right now, as well as a bunch of new content for the Sound Repository, but I should be around in case anyone has a question. The documentation is coming along, but in the meantime, I'll most likely add a lot of notes to the Wave Designer page on the DNR site for reference.

Strange,

for me it ONLY worked with commas and no change with points. If i enter  tan (x * 11.6 * pi) nothing happens but if i enter  tan (x * 11,6 * pi) the formula works.
Could this be a problem based on Windows 7 32-bit or Ableton Live 8.3.3?

I'll check if it does the same with the latest version.

UPDATE:
Same with the new v0.3.3 in Wondows 7 32-bit and Ableton Live 8.3.3 here. Only commas work but no points.

The FRAC function seems to be cool. With this example you get 3 saw waves:
 frac (x * 3)

rlahalla wrote: Hey cool, hope it helps give you some new sounds to show off! Thanks for sharing your findings :)
I already found many new interesting waveforms. In just a few minutes with the latest version (and with some of the new functions) i got around 10 new waveforms. I'll convert them to 16-bit and then test in ElectraX.

I have already used Cableguys Curve to create new waveforms with the free draw mode but it takes ages compared to "just" enter a formula like this way.

With the right combination of e.g. 2 functions you could get complex results with a quite short formula or you could create a really complex wave using a long formula with multiple functions.

Looks like when diving deeper into the use of the different functions i could get a huge library of waveforms in no time. Great tool. :tu:

Most important feature for the next versions seems to be having export with different bit depths, especially 16-bit. This would save me from using a second software for the conversion.

Odd, I'll have to take a look at this, as it does not work with commas for me whatsoever :?

Bit-depth is definitely on the list now, no worries, I'll make it happen. I'm real happy you're enjoying it thus far :D

Any chance its down to localisation? Ingonator, what 'language' is your version of Windows?
