Soldano's just begged to be modded. My Lo/Hi dual input was converted to a channel switch for clean/lead as well as toggle switches to change gain staging and character (vintage/modern). The front loading speaker cabs make it real easy to swap out speakers (Soldano cabs that is). Seems the Jet City amps are basically a modded Soldano with channel switching and separate EQ for both channels coming standard. I'd love to have separate EQs for both my Soldano channels. The Soldano's cabs get all the bass response you would ever need too, and that's just with a 2x12. If you use something lower in range than V30's you will get a really dark tone.
Jet City seem to be a custom hybrid of a Soldano amp. Don't know about their cabs though, but I'd imagine they are similar if Mike Soldano had a hand in the developement.

Agreed wrote:I'm talking about the "conventional" one, the XS is barely big enough to fit the speaker! I bet it still sounds good, probably a lot more treble heavy though (and if it's using the same speaker, that could be a problem; the cab on this is dimensioned pretty much just right to give the correct amount of mid-bass resonance required to offset the brightness of a 1x12 configuration, so it's got a good tonal balance, by no means flat - flat is boring for guitars - but it plays nicely with my bright amp; I would be surprised if the smaller model did the same).
The Jet City Eminence is actually much darker than a Greenback. That's not necessarily a bad thing, you just need to dial in extra presence to get the same sound, but I don't think the speaker will be hurt by being in a brighter cab if someone is after more of a Greenback sound.

btw, the Jet City Eminence used together with a Greenback is glorious. :tu:

My Demeter cab is bedroom level and the Randall cab that Access was using to demonstrate their amp modeler was totally drowned out by the noise of the show. Anyway, check out the Access thing, it's a killer solution.

Thanks, Eric, I will !

Jet City is offering pre-modded versions now, including a cleaned up version of the JCA20. Personally, I don't think it's worth losing the classic Soldano drive over, especially when the reverb isn't Fender-level, anyway.

Right, that's the case for the JCA5212RC, it has the clean channel of the Soldano Lucky 13. I'm looking forward to that one. The new channel switching amps that are at NAMM are the same as the 50W head, meaning basically just crunch and lead, with no real clean channel.

susiwong wrote: The flip side of the coin however : in order to play well I need to hear my guitar embedded in the mix, maybe 10% louder than it will end up, not more.
My problem is monitoring the music when playing that loud, not the amp per se.
And I have extreme headphonophobia. :-o
So I sacrifice some tone for the time being in favour of musical interaction, so to say.
Don't know if that makes any sense ...

It does make sense, but tbh I often play my guitar through my monitors (in or not in a mix)...building a complete iso room wont be easy or cheap though

so will the old model still be available? I want the 20 watt head next (next month)

Yes, that's still going to be their main product.

There is a Soldano Hot Rod 50 + in my local and i could mince in and pick it up tomorrow if i wanted one that bad but i have pretty much all my sound covered (99% content with it). I could make room for the 20 watt Jet City if it does dirt and then alot dirtier but i don't really need it and studio wise their is alot i need to turn my attention towards  I just recently finished a recording of nine tracks and i am nailing pretty much the sound i am after with ease. So here amplification wise i am sorted/Its is not at all bothering me or giving me GAS. Bloody awesome feeling i swear. However my nekrotized 3/4 sized 4x12" with the mis-matched celestion complement inside is dead/all the speakers are f00ked - the speakers have literally torn away from the mounts in consistent horizontal-like insisions (so nothing to do with the voice coils/magnet weight and the housing is bullet proof) but what i have done to that poor thing/subjected it to over the years i am not surprised it is finally dead. So i am in the hunt for a new cabinet, speakers to drop into it plus that JC 1x12" ISO Cab when it is stocked over here.

I will be definately trying out the front loaded Jet City cabs and have an avenger front loader 4x12 to compare against. Speaker wise...oh you don't wanna know i use many depending on how the mis-match sounds but it adds upto around 300 - 400 watt RMS handling, so effecieny and speaker breakup (not a fan of that, so its as low as it can be) never audibly happens basically. There is however method in my madness if you will believe me :)

you could also spend over a grand for a 1960 4x12  Seriously, Marshall is on crack...the best cab I ever had was a Hi-Watt 4x12 straight cab with fanes...that thing was monster loud, first with my plexi and then with a boogie sob. That rig was literally too loud for me to comprehend and I didn't run any pedals besides an ibanez parametric eq pedal mostly for drive, but it did sound sweet. Every head I put on that cab sounded good or better (a tusc head didn't sound good to begin with but it made my friend's tusc better) :tu:

The best cab I've ever owned is this crappy home-made thing with chicken wire for grill cloth and absolutely the ugliest imaginable green carpet covering. Fortunately, inside of it are four 30W Celestions from the 60's that sound chimy and alive. Modern Marshall cabs sound dark and dead in comparison.
