I believe I found a bug in the Phrase Editor. I am running RC v2.56b15 (x64).

Steps to reproduce:
[1] Create a phrase in the Phrase Editor.
[2] Set the name field to "Motif #1" and the group field to "Opus 1".
[3] Click the "Save As" button to save the phrase.
[4] Create a new phrase (or just alter the previous one).
[5] Set the name field to "Motif #1" and the group field to "Opus 2".
[6] Click the "Save As" button to save the phrase.
[7] A dialog box appears with the message "A phrase exists with that name. Do you want to overwrite it?"
[8] The warning is legitimate. If you click the "Ok" button, RC will overwrite the phrase "Opus 1/Motif #1" with phrase "Opus 2/Motif #1".

Apparently, the value that you have set in the "Group" field is being ignored by RC. If a phrase name already exists in the phrase database, using that phrase name again, regardless of group name, will overwrite the previously existing one.

I also noticed that when you click the "Cancel" button in response to the overwrite warning dialog mentioned above, and the "Auto Increment" option is checked, the value of the number embedded in the name does increment. Personally, I think the auto-increment should only happen if the user dismisses the overwrite warning dialog via the "Ok" button, but not the "Cancel" button.

Hi Tony,

the way it works now: phrases in the library have a unique name by which they are referenced. The group name is just an additional tag, and it does not mean that you can have two phrases with the same name but with different group tags.

You are right that the number in the name should not be incremented when you choose 'Cancel', this is fixed now.

Attila

Hello Attila!

I apparently misunderstood how the phrase database works. When I look at the phrase browser, I do not think of the phrases as being tagged with keywords (like a blog post); I see a tree structure (which makes me think I can refer to individual nodes uniquely by their path expression). Would it be possible then for the unique name to be the concatenation of the fully-qualified path with the simple name (i.e. group + '/' + name), instead of the just the simple name?

I think I remember it mentioned that the phrases database would be getting an overhaul in an upcoming revision, but I cannot remember if you mentioned what you had in mind for it.

Yes, I was thinking about the same. The phrases are saved in the Custom Phrases directory, but there cannot be two phrases with the same name (which means the filename will also be the same) even if the group is different. Subdirectories will be implemented though. I do not know yet how to solve this without making the whole thing overly complicated for the user. Maybe the 'group' could be the subdirectory itself, and when you save a phrase to a 'group', a directory will be created for that group. This sounds good, doesn't it?

Thanks!

I definitely like the idea of having subfolders for these types of data. Mainly for ease of reading a list of phrases, chord progressions, etc., and being able to find what one is looking for more easily.

Kudos Attila :tu:

yes +1

this also covers the:
"but how about the current custom phrases in the directory?"
question i guess.
a mini brain wind ( not the storm :) )
maybe an auto conversation "groups to folders"
only once via a browser option/function ?
click and sit back till you see the
"Groups to Directories conversation successfully finished"

to me not a "very" big problem i can do this sub directory structure manually
but it would be really time saver and "instant solution without confusion"

Hum... while we are at it...

Attila, may I ask you to give us a little tool (or a function if you'd prefer it inside RC) which would be aimed at convert (a batch conversion of all a given directory would even be really great) phrases in the MIDI format to phrases in the RC format.

I'd like to have such a little tool (internal or external, as you want) because I have created more than 8000 little phrases of 4 bars (not less not more, all are 4 bars) in MIDI format along the ten last years and actually I can't reuse them easily in RC in another way than import them one by one ! I want to abandon definitively my old composition editors but for the moment I can't... and it's only because I can't import directly all my personal MIDI phrases in the phrase collection of RC.

Could you make us this little tool, Attila ? And if yes... would you agree ?

I'd even pay 20 dollars for that !

Black Winny -YES ! +1000
This would be one of the most important advances of the program ahead!

Post

Yes, that would be great. Probably better as its own little program apart from RC. And maybe Blackwinny could post a link to those files he mentions after he converts them to RC phrase format

Yes, why not. For free of course. All that was simply done years after years but only in my humble totally "amateur" hobby without any commercial purpose as it was a collection of "patterns" done to reflect my "style" (new age ballads), patterns in which I dig without any need to rewrite them perpetually and just modify them after that quite like we do in RC with the note editor.

That'd be awesome, thanks man! :)

Yes, of course I will make such a tool (I do not know yet if external or internal) if there is such a huge demand for it! :)
