Way different.
+1 they are different synths :phones:

No, while Cypher 2 seems to have at least two of each module in Strobe 2, the sound generation approaches are fundamentally different. Strobe 2 has one very powerful oscillator with a multi-shape, pitch-slaved sub oscillator with waveshaping. The idea is that you're leveraging the oscillator's capabilities with the Transmod system, whereas Cypher 2 opens up many possibilities through the interaction of oscillators with each other.

The filters are different as well. Although I haven't specifically compared their sound - they have different filter types across the two synts. I am pleasantly surprised how good Cypher2 and Strobe2 sound! :phones:

Yes, there are many other differences. The two filters plus two shapers with flexible routing options, and the extensive modulation available with the mod sequencers, step sequencer, gate sequencer, arp, matrix, and scale processor multiply the possibilities. The X/Y Euclid modulator can create some really interesting paths. It's such a deep dive.

Each of them have their own unique character. I loved all three in DCAM Synth Squad and these reinvented versions do them justice. Cypher 1 was a CPU hog when it first came out, and Cypher 2 is just as innovative.

Who's found the comb filters yet...and all the modes therein? With the comb filter, turn the resonance and drive knobs up to hear the comb filter in action.

Are these new? Are they something like largo’s comb filters? Can’t demo currently. Never liked largo in general but always liked its comb filters.

Yes, the comb filter with all its modes is new. Never previously available in Synth Squad.

FYI Strobe2 is well worth picking up, one of the best VAs available.

Really didn’t like it personally.

Well this is all subjective but I don't see what's not to like. Then again I don't use presets so I never judge an instrument that way. Strobe 2 is incredibly powerful and flexible and has a strong fat sound. I've made entire songs using only multiple instances of Strobe2, including the native effects. It is just as capable as any of the hyped instruments from u-He, NI, etc.

Also, MPE.

Strobe sounds superb. It has that SH-101 sound, but it goes way beyond it. Tricks like splitting the oscillator pitch with unison are unique, as far as I know.

What is splitting the oscillator pitch with unison?

You can do lots of neat tricks with the Transmod system to create a dummy second set of oscillators, filters, etc. So you can basically turn this one oscillator synth into a multi-osc synth. This video from Strobe 1 explains it.

Thanks... that's a powerful feature. Bitwig has that built in at the DAW level so all their synths can do that and I have become used to using it constantly. The Bitwig modulation system works the same as the transmod system.

Diva, RePro and Bazille allow you to use unison spread on any modulatable parameters but not unipolar and not per individual stacked voice. That is sweet that Cypher 2 is the same as Bitwig in this capability!

Post

It is indeed powerful. The same unison trick can be done in Cypher. This is what allows to make some of the deeper church organs in Cypher2, where the 3 main oscillators are split into three new ones, so we get 6 distinct pitches/oscillators. Not bad for a VA'.

Unison can be assigned to any and every parameter. It was always possible, way back in 2009 with Cypher/Strobe 1.
