I love their discography except for that reworked version of Don't Stand So Close To Me. Not only did I prefer the energetic original version, the argument over the drums on that apparently led to the band splitting up.

Always thought this track deserved more love...

Not positive, but I think this set was 25 years ago. https://www.mixcloud.com/LiveSetsChicag ... 5-30-1997/

Fairlight vs. Synclavier, and Fairlight won, apparently. The remake would have been a decent song, had the original never existed, but you're right. There does seem to be a lack of energy in the remake.

I think it was inevitable that the Police would split in '85-'86. Many of the songs that Sting was writing from the early '80s onwards were moving away from the high-energy guitar-driven style towards the jazzier/bluesy form found on his first album.

I was a bit lukewarm about "On Any Other Day" until about 15 years ago. I could probably say the same thing about a few of their other album tracks. They seem to improve with extreme age, but I'm not sure whether it's down to the age of the songs or the age of this listener :)

Always loved Elvis Costello's 'King of America' album even though it was a nail in the coffin of The Attractions as Elvis's full time backing band. Saw EC and the Attractions at Liverpool Royal Court on his famous "Spinning Songbook" tour which accompanied the album release.

Particularly liked this song and the lines
it's the force of habit
if it moves then you f**k it
if it doesn't move you stab it
